Thanks Ross. It sure doesn't look like that anymore. I cringe every time I pass Carrara Markets.

You can see where the tower was if you look between the fast food and t-shirt stands. :D

Mazooma1, sounds like the guy who dissed you for not providing credits for every pic has a PC problem. Here's what a Texas A&M student has to say about PC.

"Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

  7. I showed that photo to Ted Brown (note name on 1/4 panel) and here is his comments;
"That was a week before I changed the suspension... I cut those long traction bars down and remounted them, and they ran over a half second quicker the next weekend... After that I built them a whole new chassis and cut down that body, was the first shop built frame to be legal in AG/S, the car was named the Wild Mouse then... Two tone Green in color..."

  8. Skywolf, the photo of the Hamberis & Mitchell '33 Willys.. I can't tell you WHO took the photo, but I can sure tell you WHERE it was taken.. I was there they day they opened in 1964, and I was there they day they closed in 2004... Carlsbad Raceway

26Tudor & hotroddon thanks for the input. I have a question for all you guys who were around during the day. There were obviously many more strips back then but how many are still operating in
California ? It must be a fairly low percentage ?

  10. Geez, the only one I can think of that is still open that we went to is Pomona. Lions, Ontario, Riverside, Irwindale, Carlsbad... gone. Even LA and The Brotherhood Raceway are gone.

The only ones that spring to mind for me are Bakersfield & Pomona.

Actually, things are a little better right now than they were for many years.
This may be an incomplete list due to my decrepit memory. In no particular order:

    Closed:
    Riverside Raceway
    Colton
    Fontana (original)
    OCIR
    Lions
    San Gabriel
    Irwindale (original)
    Ramona
    Lions
    Carlsbad
    Inyokern
    Fresno
    Lodi
    Fremont
    Half Moon Bay
    Cotati
    Santa Maria
    San Fernando
    Terminal Island
    Santa Ana
    L.A. County (Palmdale)
    Holtville

    Open today:
    Pomona (two races per year)
Fontana (the current track is attached to California Speedway)
Irwindale (the current 1/8 mile track is attached to Irwindale Speedway)
Barona (1/8 mile on the grounds of a casino northeast of San Diego)
    Bakersfield (Famoso)
    Sacramento
Sear's Point (Infineon Raceway, sometimes referred to as "Sonoma")
    Redding
    Samoa (northern coastal, near Eureka)

I know I missed a few but you get the idea.

There was also a 1/8th mile venue near Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Champion Raceway it was called I think.

Hi Guys really enjoy thread! Recently looked at Slixxx Decals upcoming decals, and they said they were doing a Don Schumacher 69 Torino decal. I've never seen this car nor a picture of same. Anyone have any pix of this car?!... Dragnut55:D
