Bonneville is great but the salt ate my modified!! I washed ,rinsed etc. but the nastty poop got me .. I jjust cut the bottom off the body to restore door sills ,rocker panels and sub floors ..I built it once now a frame up restoration!!!! see page198 in Peter Vincents book Hot ROD for pics.
I believe it. A trip to and on the beach got me once and that was a few hundred in parts and many hours work to restore it.
Salt Away is your friend. Seven years of hitting Speed Week at B'ville with Big Olds and not one rust issue. http://www.saltawayproducts.com/
OK, so I missed a few bolts with the salt away....whats a few bolts a**** best friends. Have I told you lately how much I love and adore you??? Kitchen's almost done, more cookies coming your way soon.
You should have sold it to me buddy. I know the pain Ron. Driving in 8'' of salt water takes its toll. The 32 Fiver is getting a rebuild also. Sometimes the damage won't show up for years. Salt-a-way don't help the cracks.
A good coating of El Mirage dust is a great protecter. And going thru a good summer rainstorm on the way home helps too.
Was running a Lakester-BGL cl*** on the salt and Salt Away is your best friend. Would hit the car wash in Wendover before leaving town and once home, More salt away and put the gr*** sprinklers under the car for hours.
a friend used his old Blazer as the push vehicle at Bonneville last year. Even with lots of cleaning right after leaving ended up with a lot of rust. should not stop anyone, but possibly spraying some type of lite weight oil or sealer would help protect the 'ol tin.
My truck bed is full of honor. After the car wash and sprinklers try wiping your finger on the underneath metal and taste it. Its still salty and 6 months later there will be chunks of salt on the driveway. I cringe when I see hi dollar cars out there. The salt gets into every nook & cranny on the car. Still and all theres nothing else in the world like it !
DONT EVER TAKE ANYTHING YOU CARE ABOUT KEEPING ON THE SALT. Its really not worth the "cool" pic of your car on the salt. During the 2nd restoration of the Mormon Meteor they were taking handfuls of salt out of the nooks and crannies of the car. Thats after it had been restored once, and some 60 years on. I always take a rental car and coat the race vehicles with as much Salt-Away as possible, then once home I dis***emble the race vehicle and clean and inspect everything. Even doing this I still get salt falling out of places on my race bikes years later.
