Have you looked at a set of what are referred to as shorty hedders.they work on most applications.they hug the block pretty tight.

This is a set of Shorty type headers. Most decent hot rod shops have them :) ... and eBay

1984 to 1991 Corvettes had basically the same thing

Cut the smog contol tubes off, weld up the holes and they look like this.

They are usually on eBay for 25 to 50 dollars a set. I believe that the Corvette ones actually tuck in tighter than the street rod aftermarket ones ... :)

And NO this is NOT my auction ... just aheads up :D

Chevrolet used a LOT of different exhaust manifolds that fit a SBC over the years. Some exit the middle, others exit at the rear. Some can be switched so they exit at the front.

V8 Monzas had about the tightest fitting iron exhaust manifolds I remember seeing ... shown below.

Left side and Right side exhaust manifolds interchange ( on the engine ) ...
So if you see a manifold that will fit your engine AND will fit in your frame ... it does not have to be a specific side ( L or F )

You also MAY want to LOOK at moving the entire engine/transmission over a inch or so. Many cars came from Detroit with the engine offset to the right ... The SBC in my 32 Ford is moved over about a inch to gain clearance for the steering shaft.
