1956 ford fairlane drop spindles

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 56 ford custom, Feb 26, 2010.

  1. Im installing air ride on my car to lay frame and i was told to get drop spindles so that the geometry would be better. Also that it would take a lot of stress off of the ball joints. I know fatman fabrications makes them but i cant find any site that sells them. If anyone can help me with a site that would be great! Thanks

Fatman does make a good quality set, but you must switch to discs to use them... unfortunately they don't always tell you this when ordering and some customers are hard to talk into switching from drums.

  3. Damn...I like my drums. Do they sell the brake kit too?

Nothing special about the DropnStop spindles, there just machined Granada spindles. The machine work couldn't be easier, I've posted how to do this on an earlier thread.

  9. I just dont have the time to go to a junk yard and pull those spindles from a car and then hunt down all the parts to make work. Unless somebody here has all that.

  10. Well if anyone knows the year of the granada parts i need and all the info to make the spindles and discs fit my 56 let me know. Its greatly appreciated. Also if these spindles drop my car.

    Year 1975-80.

    Ford Granada,
    Mercury Monarch,
Lincoln Versailles (the best is Lincoln don´t need rooming the lower ball joint).

    And a question:
-Some people says they are 1 ½" lower than stock spindles,is this true or just bull---t?

    Thanks!

The Granada/lincoln Versilles drops it 1" over the stock spindle. Then cut 1/4 to 3/4 of a coil off the springs. You may need to ream(easy to do) the outer tie rod as well for original ties rods.

The same spindlles conversions can be used on 55-64 fords and 55-57 t-birds.

The Fatman Drop Spindle drops it 3" and uses all Granada(easy/cheapto buy new) brake stuff. The quality/safety of the Fatman can be questioned as it is a welded together spindle instead of Fords one Pieice forged. Teh Fatman is the same spindle a s the other 3" drop spindle sources.

The granada swap to disc is super simple and increases the drivability and safety of these cars. Just add a Granda Manual brake mater cylinder in place if the original, add the granada or adjustable proportioning valve, and I prefer to change to a Push Button(cheby pickup) type brake switch, as the brake pressure to stop will be less with the conversion and the original switch may be slow reacting.

It would be wonderful if a 2"-3" Forged one-piece granada style spindle could be made in the aftermarket for Fords, but the popularity is low.

You would think that someone would make a granada style drop spindle since its used as a direct bolt-on for V8 falcons and mustangs. Maybe someone does make a drop spindle for the mustang that can be modified to fit the 55-64 fairlanes, galaxies, t-birds etc... might be worth looking into. I have used the granada spindles on falcons and mustangs before and they worked just fine. I also heard that some year of t-bird disc brake spindles bolt onto the galaxies (62-64 galaxies I think). I bought a pair about 3 years ago for my 63 Gal but never used them, gonna try them on my dad's 62. Just wish I could remember what year they came off of.

Basically all you have to do is take some measurements and figure out the length and taper on the balljoints to determine if they will fit your car.
