I'm mocking up the rear of the truck and this is about the best I can come up with for the plate. My floor is raised so I can't recess the plate into a box either, thought about maybe having someone roll a bead around the plate for a more finished look. What are your thoughts on this plate location ?
Are you going to run a bumper or have a rolled pan? IMHO on the tailgate like you have it looks like you just slapped it without any thought.
I was thinking just a round tube bumper on the back, I mocked this up but it's to small diameter. I'm going to add the chevrolet script in the middle of that piece under the tailgate. Right now the tailgate would be 15 inches tall and the panel under it is 4 inches tall.
I'd go with the script Chevy logo and then a rolled pan with a frenched licence plate to match your tail lamps.
Yes they do, I was thinking of using those bolts with the lights in them or putting a single louver right over the top and have a light behind it so it would shine down. If I got a bead rolled around the plate it would look recessed but then the single louver idea wouldn't work.
From what I can see, it looks like a nice build. Wherever you put the plate it'll look just fine. More photos please?
Will the tailgate be operational? If so, it wouldn't be visible if you had it open while driving. Put it off to one side like they were built.
No it won't, more for looks and trying to keep it in the theme of the original look. I guess I'd rather have something that looks like a tailgate rather than a big slab of metal from top to bottom is what I'm saying. I raised the floor and brought the inside right to the edge of the rear of the bed. The floor is about an inch and a half above the top of those tail lights.
I use those same(light-in bolts)on my '57. I think the plate would look best, down under the bed & to the psngr side. Just a thought..
License plates are not beautiful things. I think it's way too prominent on the tailgate, it becomes the centerpiece of the rear end. I'd make a simple mount and put it below, and slightly back under the bed.
Yeah,Yeah...I know these are kinda "Street Rodder-ish",how about a "hidden" license plate? It swings up when you turn off your ignition. http://www.clparts.com/clshop/store.php/categories/hidden-license-plate-kit
If you are thinking of running a vintage plate and frenching, Not all NY old plates are the same size.
I do have this over rider kicking around, who would have thought this would take so much monkeying around
How about centered on the 4" panel, And split the bumper and curve it in towards the plate. And lights in the bumper ends that shine on plate. Thinking like "bumperettes"?? My .02
Recessed plates, oh no! a couple of 4" exhaust with the plate hanging between them on some rusty log chain.
Leave the license plate off. Keep it in the cab with you or up in the rear windshield when driving. Don't let the rules get in the way of your vission!! The Theo has Spoken!!! I would hate to crowd such a nice ride with a piece of cheep tin.
On my '40 GMC I have the rear plate on a bracket bolted under the rear-most frame crossmember. The front plate is bolted to a bracket bolted to the front axle U bolts. It's kinda hard to read though from the accumulation of animal parts on it...
