I vote no chop as well. I don't think it will look right with a chop. Just lower it and it should look good.

I honestly thought the opinions would be a little more mixed than this...

I do agree with everyone else though. Don't chop it, lower it after a while, and lace the roof right away.

No Chop and it'll be on the road in no time, Chop and it might be months before it's done.

Got to agree with everyone else on this one. Simple chopping (now THERE is an oxymoron) would shorten the side window height and screw up the not only the top's proportion, but the proportions of the entire car.

If you're really determined to do something with the top, taking the crown out of the roof sheetmetal could give you what you're looking for, and provide the side benefit of allowing all the glass to remain stock. Of course you better have a fair understanding of the top's structural engineering, and have your metal working chops down to pull it off.

thank you everybody for your responses, i kinda had thought that the roof already looked pretty low as well. Im a fabricator so its hard to resist chopping but that sure saves me alot more work and headache. thanks for the input all.

Congrats on a great score, and I'm happy that you won't chop it. Some cars simply don't need to be cut up to look cool...yours would be one of those.

I'm glad to hear that you're leaning towards leaving the roofline alone. It'd be a tough one to pull off, AND, that particular body style is just bitch'n as is. Totally the ignore the advice to "...shorten the ass a foot or so...". Worst idea ever. Want a Chevy? Sell that Cheiftan to a guy who's drooling over it (trust me, there are guys who'd sell their soul for that car) and spend the money on a Chevy, don't turn that Pontiac into one...

I like it just the way it is and would put my efforts only into getting it powered, painted and back on the street. Neat car.

i would NEVER shorten the ass, that im sure of. Its the tail of this car that makes it unique

  21. Biggest problem with a chop is how to handle the rear window, most guys put something else, smaller, in and fill the gaps with steel. I tend to lean towards the no chop side, get her roadworthy and see how you feel about it then.

im going against the grain here. i would chop it 3 inches, and make a lexan backglass. just like the moonglow. it would be very unique, and i dont think it would look squashed.. its actually a very easy chop. heres a chevy i did. i know its a longer differant car but still the same vibe. colors are close too..

See my avatar, that's the 54 chevy I'm building. I think a lot of old cars need chopped, but yours is not one of them IMO. Do it if you must, but too many people think that chopping any car makes it cooler, sometimes it just makes the car look stupid, along with the guy that cut it.

now see that chevy chop (above) is exactly what i was talking about. I dont think a couple inches would make it looked squashed. It is a very easy chop to do with the a pillar and b pillar at almost the same angle and it could be done with no splitting side to side or lengthwise. This is not my first chop and i know what people are saying in regards to it looking squashed but mercs are long to and they are one of the most popularly chopped cars. Either way im going to get it on the road prior to turning it into MORE of a project. I do appreciate all the input.

my question was actually more about peoples opinions on the "proper" way to chop a car like this. I have heard of supporting it by tacking in supports but then i have also heard that as long as the doors stay on and closed that the gaps stay fine.

i just tacked the doors shut at the top and it was fine..

and you will have to make a couple 12" splits at the back.. good luck
