That story was part of a series we ran in Cars Illustrated called "Slam of The Month". If you go to Moparts.com, in the General Discussion forum, there's a thread that explains the history of it all.
Oh, and yeah, I am that guy..........

Winston and Petersen did not "get Cars Illustrated shut down".
Now Defeo getting shot to death in A queens gin mill, that is of course true. White Punk on Nitro is the bastard child of Suzie and Wally Parks.
Defoe is buried next to Jim Morrison and Freddie DeName.

  8. Man... that was my favorite magazine as a kid!

I loved the article on "How to do a burn out"... and the 12.99 article...

    And... of course... Blondie!

    Hahahahaha!!

They used to call Car Craft "Camaro Craft". Best - car magazine - Ever! I still remember the articles about the Grant National and NY to Miami in 18 hours articles. I wonder if the mag is available online anywhere?

I've said it before, Tony DeFeo is the best auto journalist of our generation. They don't come around very often. Put down the wrenches Tony and hit that keyboard, we need you again.

Ryan should give him a topic and let him run wild...

Defoe did a bunch of those when he was writing for High Performance Cars. there was another one about a Pro-Street Maverick with Doug Thorley Show Tubes (remember those?) That may have been even funnier than the "blondie" article. What was really funny was, I was heavy into the local street racing scene when those went into print, it was like he was listening in on some of the conversations we were having at cruise nights and so on, and deleted some of the profanity and added a healthy dose of wit. REALLY funny shit.
