The 47 pu my neighbor was working on is finally finished. We carried it to a charity show last weekend and ate the 9" that we had installed. It was a 390 posi unit that was whining really really bad on deceleration. We pulled it out Sunday and the gear lube looked like nickle anti seize when we drained it. Put a Granada rear that we had back in it. It is now a one wheel wonder with 275 gears in it. Does one hell of a burn out though. Carried it to the monthly cruise in in Plant City last night and had a blast. On the way back home we buzzed back the local law enforcement at another scene at 80-90 mph. Needless to say we both backed down real quick after seeing them. Backed out of mine fast enough that the motor stumbled when it came off of boost. Here are a couple of pics of the 47 pu.
Yes, I have some bigger pictures, but I'm not able to put them on here as they have a limit on the size. What details are you referring to??
This might sound stupid but I have seen a couple 9 inch rear ends get ate up because someone changed the yoke and overtightened the nut with an impact. There is a crush sleeve on the pinion that is supposed to get mashed down just the right amount for the bearing preload. Over tightening the nut crushes it more and puts too much load on the bearings. The factory manual proceedure says to check the preload with an inch/pounds torque wrench before removing the yoke and reinstall at 8-14 inch pounds more than that initial reading. This is the amount of torque required to turn the pinion. You are supposed to have the brake drums off to do this. You should always use a new nut and if you overtighten you can't just back the nut off, you need a new crush sleeve and have to set it. With a new crush sleeve and bearings the setting for preload is 22-32 inch pounds of torque to turn the pinion. Some 9 inch rear ends use a solid sleeve and the setting proceedure for those is different.
Rob... The truck looks cool. Much better than the last time I saw it! It's hard to believe it's the same truck. Matt said that Ralph had taken it to Chic-fil-A. Did he end up not using the big block?
He traded a big block core for the rebuilt small block he is running in it. We had it at Chik fil a once, they have cancelled this cruise until after the first of the year. Some new guy bought the entire mall and they are working with him to see if he will let the cruise continue or do away with it.
It will be at the Rumblers show in Feb. He already has a guy that wants to buy it, but he told him not until after the show in Orlando.
