302 oil pump pickup issues

Im building a '68 ford 302 out of a failane and My engine builder gave me an oil pump from melling and a pickup tube to go with it. the problem is the pickup is too low and it's hitting the oil pan. does anyone know if they used several different sized oil pump pickups that year? or maybe I just have the wrong part? should I just get a bigger pan? thanks for the help!

 

if the pan is not a double sump ,there should only be one pick up for the p***enger pan. if the pick up is for the rear sump, late model 5.0/302, then it won't work. you should be able to use the pick up for the pan.

 

most likely as the other guys have stated there are different pickups.make sure you match the pan to the pickup.
also you should throw a tack weld on the tube to the pump.its not uncommon for them to work their way out.

 

jscoma47, ford dosen't attach like a chevy. it is bolt on.

Put modling clay on the sump screen. Bolt up the pan. Now drop the pan check the thickness of the clay. you need 3/4 or more .

 

The pickup for the front sump pan goes down right next to the pump.

The pickup for a rear sump pan goes back to the third main cap were it is bolted to it and then drops down.

Then there is the mid sump pan there the pickup goes back to about the main cap then drops down on an angle.

 

I have an 89 302. It was originally a rear sump, but I changed it to a front sump with a pan and a pickup from a truck... Bronco, I think. Then I changed to a 65 Mustang front sump pan and the the truck oil pick up would not fit, so I got the Mustang one that looked ALMOST identical, but it fit. My point is you need to get the pickup that pits the pan you're using. I had 3 pans and 3 different pickups. They're only about $10, so just get the one you need.

 

The Ford 302 has seveal different oil pans and on some applications the pump was on the rear main on others it was on the front. Where does the dip stick go in? is it through the block on the driver side or is it into the front timing chain area?

 

The dist. is in the front, so how could the pump be in the rear?
