Making the neighbors happy

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by A32Flathead, Mar 10, 2010.

  1. So yesterday for the 1st time since we moved, it stopped raining long enough for me to get the toys out of the garage.....

The Pontiac fired up straight away, seeing as it hasn't been run since October, and not even charged up, I was happy!!

I left it running in the drive for a while, then loaded the hound up & went for a run round the block, as I came back, neighbor across the street was getting out of his friends truck, he's about 75 or so, and his eyes lit up when he saw the '51.

I pulled up & him & his buddy walked over & proceeded to get all misty eyed over it, he saw it was a Chieftain & told me I was "Livin in high cotton" driving a Chieftain...whatever that means?

He told me he had always wanted a Pontiac, but couldn't afford one when he was a kid, and had to make do with Chevy's [IMG]

    They liked the bike too.

I think technically the term is "Living in tall cotton," but we cut old guys slack because they're cool.

High cotton is when your crops were growing high and producing a lot....making you rich.

That's cool. The lady across the street asked me for help one day, first time we met. She said she saw me outside all the time working on my Desoto. She started crying talking about how much her husband would have loved me. Apparently he used to have 2 Mercury customs, a 49 and 50. He had passed away a few years ago. She then ran into the house and came back out with a stack of The Flathead magazines from the 70's for me.

Back in the days when cotton was picked by hand it required bending over all day long to reach the cotton bolls. If the cotton plant was "tall" it meant the work was much easier and thus, life was better !! I have hand-picked a bit of cotton on a university research farm in Alabama and the saying was well known in those parts!!

You have a sweet ride and some good neighbors.........life is good for you too!

when I moved into my place my neighbour came over to introduce himself he was about 65 then and saw my cars & then proceeded to tell me about his channeled 34 coupe he had in the sixties and used it on his wedding day, I quickly asked if he still had it stuffed away in his garage, unfortunately he didn't!............

It's "high cotton" here in Texas too. My family grew cotton at one time. Grandma and Grandpa pulled bolls. Back breaking work. You can learn a lot from those who came before us. Just sit and listen.

It's "High Cotton" here too. My dad tells this story about an older guy he met while doing a display to promote one of the car shows he used to be involved with. This older guys was looking at our friends chopped '32 three window. This thing is a bright yellow highboy with a blown smallblock in it. Pop describes the guys as "looking like a doctor" and thinks he is going to tell my dad all about how they "Ruined this old Ford". Dad and said gentleman strike up a conversation about the hopped up '32 Ford with a 3/4 race flatty he had when he was a kid!! Pop said he could have taked to that guy all day and listened to storys about the hotrod life we all dream about. Listen up if you have an older person interested in your ride. They are the ones that lived what we are trying to recreate and most are excited about what we are doing, besides old hotrodders have the best stories!

I would BAN you in a second if I could, GREAT representation of an alliance member NOT. How about trying to have some RESPECT, especially for a generation of men and women who have already earned their keep.
