    Hi guys,

Can somebody tell me how to keep my fenders from rusting, if I wanted to sand them down to mostly bare metal? I imagine there's some kind of clearcoat that I can get? I'm working on a '36 plymouth sedan and wanted to just kinda roll it around for the summer without much paint, then do'r up good next winter.

    Thanks

120-180 grit dry and lacquer clear . or a decent epoxy. if not, all others will corrode and start to rust.

spray em with a 50/50 mix of phosphoric acid& distilled water.Kept inside they stay rust -free for years.Sand off the white residue before epoxy priming. If u ignore the last step your primer will peel off in sheets! ASK ME HOW I KNOW!

Metal prep that they sell at home depot. It's green in color and in a large plastic jar. You can find it in the paint section where they carry paint remover. I used it on my truck and it did the trick. I just brushed it on and left it alone. After when I was ready to do some body work, I just sanded it off. It did the job of protecting the bare metal.

A dehumidifier in your shop will help a lot, too.

I've always heard WD40 is a big no no if you ever want to paint your car.

Not if he's planning on painting it.

Picklex20 works great, but I would still put down some good epoxy primer for peace of mind.

OSPHO. Another brand of the stuff mentioned in post #12 above. Works fine under PPG DP series epoxy but check if compatible for other brands, especially etching primers.

PPG epoxy primer dp-90 is flat black or you could use metal etch primer. It will have a brown transprant look.

I wouldn't do the wd40 thing if you want to paint it...bad results. Gibbs I've had good results with, cosmolene was used extensively (I think it still is used to be honest). I honestly would throw some PPG epoxy on it, be safe.

You will get sick and tired of the maintenance of bare metal. You can spend your money on 6 cans of Gibbs Brand and a case of scotch-bright pads or you can buy enough DP90 to cover it... You'll eventually get there.

For what its worth I was watching Two guys Garage on Spike a couple weeks ago and they said to wipe transmission fluid(new) on the metal. I can not vouch for this, just happen to retain it in the section of my mind full of near useless information.....

A good UV clear, but make sure you go the extra mile on your prep. Make sure to use heavy dishwashing gloves or something like that to keep your metal oil free. Its all in the prep

I used a 75-25 mix of solvent / trans fluid on my roadster for several years while building it. When it was time to do the paint , I washed it down with metal prep and water , then primed it with Valspar Direct to Metal primer . No bad experiances at all .
