I've noticed a lot of new guys running around the HAMB acting like they didn't read the registration warning before they started posting. This is very bad the longevity of these folks, so I thought I would emphasize the importance again here.

New guys, please read... Old guys, please don't comment...

The HAMB is dedicated to spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and kustoms to hoodlums world wide. That’s right – TRADITIONAL. And we aren’t talking Beach Boys and poodle skirts here fellas. If you are into a-side 50’s pop, lawn chairs, ruler contests, and all things that make hot rodding warm and cozy then you might want to find another message board. If you aren’t sure what we mean by “traditional”, then you might think twice as well. If you’ve come here to set a rep, talk some shit, and make some fun then you had better stop the registration process right now.

Even if you have come here for all the right reasons, don’t expect posting to be easy. We don’t cater to new fellas unless they show a dedication to spreading this tradition of ours first. We welcome young, old, foreign and all – but our original members and our staff expect a certain level of respect and an effort to keep things true and on topic.

Maybe you are an old fart with a past. Maybe you are one of the guys that started this tradition we cherrish. We built this place for you and your posts mean the world to us. Hop on and introduce yourself. This is your board.

Still reading? Then you must be cut out for this, right? We recommend you read some more. Check out all the forums, develop an understanding for how things work around here, learn the “do’s” and “do not’s”… The key to a happy HAMB newbie is to understand the joint BEFORE you begin posting. You want to be happy don’t ya newbie?

We have very few written rules here on the HAMB and that’s the way we like it, but we won’t hesitate to dump disruptive posters, ego freaks, or shit talkers. We are all here to learn and teach - please keep your other perogatives on the sidelines.

    Rules:
    1. No profanity in subject lines
    2. No political/religious/racial posts
    3. No Porn.
    3. All personal information listed on this board is private and protected. The HAMB does not sell this information and you are not privy to use it for your own reasons. Test us on this one and we will bite.

    Guidelines:
    1. If in doubt, don’t post it
    2. Stay on-topic and relevant with your posts… OT posts aren’t generally appreciated by our membership.
    3. Gotta easy question? Try using the search function first.
    4. Your life here would probably be easier if you complete your profile and introduce yourself before jumping into the deep end...

Ryan, I know your post applies to me. I came to discover the HAMB when Shawn Howard, a hot-rodder, car-club member, bar owner and dear friend from Tulsa was killed. All the folks on the HAMB rallied to support him -- and the shocked and saddened members of the car community. If I've failed to properly introduce myself, I sincerely apologize. You all are great -- some of the genuinely nicest folk I've ever had the opportunity to come across. And I thank Shawn for that. And I thank all of you for letting me be here.

I've got a heart-felt appreciation for what's posted here, and I read the board all the time. I've learned a lot here. It also reminds me so much of the time I was able to spend with Shawn and all the cool folks I've met because of him.

    So, much belatedly: Greetings.

    -- Chance.

may i add, please, that including actual info in a post's subject is a great help? a subject line like "need help" or "what is this?" will get passed over a lot. subjects like "how do i mount a 324 olds engine in an A frame?" or "how do i tell a 348 from a 409?" will get read more and therefore get more answers.

    thanx fer the sandbox, ryan...

It's popular to hate the HAMB right now and in a lot of ways that's a good thing. We started this board as under dogs and as a group I think we all do better that way. Like it or not, the HAMB is here to stay and the HAMB is always going to be a tad off center.

All that said, we aren't going to be a group that caters to new people looking to jump on a bandwagon or old guys with egos too big to teach and learn.

We are pretty much shutting the doors on a lot of guys and plan on making the place a little more cozy... I'm sure we will make lots of enemies in doing so.

Good! This place was starting to get a little big. I don't want to loose that "trust" between HAMBers. With more and more people the odds of getting screwed on a deal increase and leads to distrust across the board.

I love it when 'hot rodders' talk about 'big egos' in the same sentence that they're bemoaning 'young punks'...

    A little conflicted perhapse?

Conflicted? Nope, not all... and even if we were, we wouldn't give a fuck.

Point is, there is a certain level of maturity that is expected and while we pride ourselves in being out there a bit, we also realize that we can't have constant shit slinging and still have a productive atmosphere.

I'm not real sure why anyone would want to talk shit on a message board (don't they have better things to do with their time) or why anyone would invest so much of themselves personally into a comment made on a message board, but it happens too much on the HAMB and we aren't going to let those folks over run the place.

The HAMB is for like minded folks with strong opinions. That's cool. It's when these guys instigate the slinging or won't give up on having the last word that we run into problems.

Bottom line, if the HAMB is just me and a couple of buddies then that's what it will be. I'm not all that charitable and I have to protect the interest of the guys that help keep this place alive.

People are not obligated to have auctions or send the HAMB money. It's not about money. That said, people ARE obligated to either keep their mouths shut or contribute something of value.

I have to say that you all are a breath of fresh air. I will be the first to admit that I know very little about the cars that i drool over everytime that i see them on the streets. well about making one. I have tried some places locally but most of them do not want to share, especially since i do not have a hot rod project in the garage. but i have learned from so much from reading the board and as i said it has defiantly light the fire to get a hot rod project in the garage.

I was talking about some of the posts on that other forum, not us...

But I hear you loud and clear and agree whole-heartedly.

We've unfortuanately developed an image that while we shouldn't care less about it, it sometimes defines us. It's one of the symptoms of esisting in cyberspace with this buffer between us. Being face to face strips away the bull-shit. We're a board that tries to above all else, cater to real people. We don't descriminate against the wierd, just the arrogant. People largely turn to the internet to ESCAPE reality, so when we slap them in the face with it, they get ego-ouchies...

Bottom line... Don't talk unless you have something to SAY. And talk to HAMBers with the honor and respect that you would afford someone standing in your face. And most importantly, respect our Traditional Hot Rod and Custom 'Mission Statement.'

One thing maybe worth passing on as a suggestion for the newcomers would be to use your PMs (Private Messages) when you have a casual question for a specific HAMBer...it eliminates posts like "HEY ___________!" that get opened only to read "What size undwear do ya want for Christmas?" or something like that.

(If you send a PM, the next time your buddy logs on, he or she will have the flashing envelope to alert them that there is an urgent message waiting for them.)

word! i've been a bit guilty in the past of posting nonsense here... but i out grew that. i learned that the more stuff posted the more it costs to keep this thing going... as ryan said, it's not about the money but when we post nonsense that takes up bandwidth, which is the measure of info. and the reference by which ryan is billed, it's stealing.
