hey guys i purchased a car with a bill of sale only i live in kansas and this is usualy no big deal... last time the car was ***led was in missouri in 2004 and this is causing my problem for some reason they wont allow me to ***le it and wont tell me who the last registered owner was... i bought it from a mechanic shop that the customer gave it to them cause he couldnt pay the bill and that was in 2004 and they dont have any idea who the guy was.. i called Broadway ***le but that is gonna cost me 350 bux... anyone else have any ideas on where i should go from here??? Btw its not real hamb friendly but its a 1971 buick centurion two door hard top with a real nice 455... any help would be greatly apreciated!!! thanks guys!
won't the Missouri DMV run the VIN number and tell you who the registered owner is? or maybe a friendly cop?
nope missouri DMV said i had to be the registered owner for them to tell me who the registered owner is... I told the lady to think about what she just said.. and she hung up on me...
i asked my lawyer about a quiet ***le but he said its more expensive than using broadway if there wouldnt have been any record in 2004 i wouldnt have any problem getting a ***le in ks...
I believe the DMV can send the registered owner a release of liability request...but the outcome may not be to your liking.
yeah thats what i was thinking too.. i have a buddy that is a cop running the vin for me to see what he can find out....
I would go to a Missouri DMV, walk in, wouldn't do it on the telephone. With bill of sale in hand, IF it was last registered there as late as 2004, they can help you sort it out.
>>>>.,29Nash,,,,,,No No No ,,i live in Missouri they'll make him pay all the years from 2004 PLUS penelties to bring it up to date ,,might cost him a HUGE amount of $$$$ ,,Bill of sales don't werk here ,,Best to Google ,, "***les Unlimited" outa the south ,,anything over 30 years old they'll provide a current ***le for ,,
SPEND THE $350 AND BE DONE,you probably got a hell of a deal with no ***le anyway,or if nothing else pull the engine out and get something to put it in.Hell,I live in Florida and a bill of sale here won"t get you ****.
Most states have a 'use-tax agreement' with other states, where two states don't charge for the same time period. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think at the end of the line, after they have traced the information, (***UMING that it was registered in MO in '04?), the last question will be, "Are you a Missouri resident, Do you want to register the vehicle in Missorui? If the answer is NO, then all he has to do is take the information collected back to KS. One thing is for sure, he won't get anywhere calling them on the phone, needs to take what he has and go in there with plans to hang around for a while. Another benefit to going to the state where it was last licensed is that if any hanky-panky has been going on it will surface BEFORE Broadway ***le gets their money... It's been said a thousand times, but ***le Services can't do anything that the individual can't, they just do legwork. My reasoning for my recommended approach is that KS and MO are close enough that I would try to resolve the issue on my own.

i just hope if i do find the last owner he will coperate with me and not give me any problems... i guess ill go to the DMV tomorrow and see what they say!
In most states repair shops and tow companies can apply for a storage or mechanics lien ***les. I would check with the shop you bought it from and they could probably do a search for the previous owner and get a ***le for the car since they were owed money on it. Offer them a few bucks and volunteer to do all of the paperwork if that helps. I just did this in Nebraska on a car last ***led in Kansas. You just have to jump through all of the hoops for them. Good luck
Gentlemen, ***leing of old cars/trucks is getting more difficult by the day. I live in Illinois and own several "old cars". I bought a '40 Buick from Wisconsin last Spring and it sailed through Secretary of State with nary a question. In November I applied for ***le and transfer of registration for a '41 Ford pickup. A couple months p***ed, no ***le. So, in January, I first enquired at the local SOS office. After they did a computer inquiry, they told me it was in "Quality Control"......."where all old vehicle transactions are going now" and gave me a file # and a telephone number at the SOS main office. That produced almost no response, only that "it was under review". This week (two months later) I got a letter from SOS Police Investigator requesting that I contact her. Did so and learned that ALL transactions from 1948 back must go through this process. Questions followed and when it was determined I no longer had the original ch***is with the VIN (I am using a Fatman ch***is), I was told I will have to go through the ***embled vehicle ***le procedure. THAT requires first getting the vehicle in operating condition, an appraisal, sales taxes paid on any parts not verified as already taxed, a ***le bond and inspection. Had I the original ch***is with VIN, it would have to be inspected and verified before a new ***le would be issued. Can your state be far behind?? Ray
be careful using Broadway ***le. Thanks to Boyd Coddington, they are very well know at the DMV. In WI, it is a red flag. I had great success with another firm, but their rates are similar. PM me if you are ready to spend the money and all other methods have been exhausted.
does kansas have "bonded ***les?" here in wa. state they will let you register and tab the car. after 3 years you get legal ***le if nobody protests it!
"***led in 2004" are the key words here. Fact is it may as well be a 2007 Corvette, the ***le is till in some else's name, that being the owner of the car. Here in TX a shop can acquire a mechanic's lien against a car or a negotiable ***le through legal processes. They cannot sell a car without going through this process or they have committed theft. You may have no recourse other than getting your money back from this sale through the Attorney General of the State of Missouri. The shop which sold you the car may have made a big big mistake. Don't get involved with magic fixes as they could be a trip to the pokey for you. A currently ***led car is dangerous to play with bill of sale or not. Receiving stolen property is a crime too.
did the shop ever put a lien on the car? i don't know about kansas but in ca all you generally need is that lien paperwork and the bill of sale from the shop. usually the shop doesn't even have to transfer ownership. of course, how smoothly this process goes always depends a lot on how nice your dmv clerk feels like being, but there's precedent. i'd first get every s**** of paper i could from the shop. and make copies of everything, on the off chance you get an ***hole who'll try and make trouble in either the original owner or dmv clerk.
Yep, all of that; Knowing, but not divulging a material fact is part of the fraud statutes. Further, if the seller knows for a fact that "it was registered in '04", seller has potentially enough information to negotiate the ***le in a proper manner. If, in fact the car wasn't actually registerd in '04, telling that tale to expedite the sale is fraud.
