I just spent the last 15 minutes on the search looking for an old post about making your own tie rods/drag links. no luck So what do you use? I have the taps. I was going to run up to buy the steel soon. Thanks
I am a really cheap fellow. I am going to use pipe. I don't need anyone to rag on that decision. The tubing that Ford used was .875 (7/8). Pipe is .840 . That's close enough for me. I got some heavy wall stuff for $30/20'. I will drill it out to size and tap.
i use 7/8" od DOM tubing with .188 wall because i have a big pile of it....most street rod ch***is makers use .156 wall....either way you will need access to a lathe to drill it out to 5/8" to tap it..at least drill it out and start the tap in a lathe i'm not gonna rag on the pipe , what anyone use's is up to them....my recogmendation is to use DOM tubing jason..you are just 40 miles from me , give me the lenght you need for the tie rod and drag link..i'll cut it off and give it to you when we do you hubs
Jason, listen to 36-3window. Use seamless tubing (Drawn Over Mandrel).Try your local supplier for Jorgensen steel. Using a lathe ensures the threads are even on both sides of the tubing. C9 did a thread on this some time ago, should be in the tech-o-matic.
If I recall correctly the closest D.O.M. for 11/16" threads without reaming to get a tap started would be .875" (7/8) X .120" or .125" wall. I think I have some on the rack if you need it (about $2.50/ft.).
