Nerf bar stainless or mild steel?

So I am cheap! What is the least cost? Build a nerf bar from 1/2" stainless bar and polish it yourself or use mild steel bar and have it chromed?

My thinking says - stainless??

 

stainless has a good side.it can be found in s**** yard and if so that is much cheeper,it don't rust if welded with the right stuff

 

I bought mine in a s**** yard they had tons of it

 

I like stainless. You can polish it, or put a brush satin finish, either way it will look better then chrome.
