What car would you resist the temptation to modify?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by adjustablejohnsons, Mar 13, 2010.

  1. Is there a car you've always wanted that if you got your hands on one, you would leave it just as it came from the factory?

There are several that I feel that way about...1953 or 1954 Buick Skylark..1958 Impalla with 348 power..ditto for a 1961-1965 409..any early Vette (that is what got me thinking...saw a '61 this morning....)

    How 'bout you?

well, i've always wished i could find a car from my great-great-grandfathers company. if i found a complete car, i would keep it original.

that said, if i found a motor only..... well, then it would be game on to try to create a early era racer!

BTW: This would be early 1900's.

I have a client's 1934 Chevy Master deluxe 2-door sedan. Its completely orginal and the wood is perfect. It even has a running 194c.i 6 and lots of parts. The real kicker is it is one of 11 cars built at the 34 worlds fair. It has a plaque on the dash and all the paperwork. The owner is retired and lost a ton of money in the recent market crash. So it's for sale..... before all of this he asked so what would it take to make a street rod out of it I almost cried.

Numbers matching, split-rearwindow Vette. Some things you just don't screw with.

There's a bone stock, absolutley pristine 1932 3W that I see once a year at the holiday cruise in Pasadena. It's showroom condition.
THAT should never be modified. It is gorgeous.

1932 5 window and 3 window. Just can't chop them. They look good just like they came from the factory.

Virtually any car (or motorcycle) 1960 or earlier if found original and complete should be kept that way. They're only original once even if its a Edsel.

Ditto on the 55-57 Thunderbird, 312 V-8, 3-2's, 4 speed. Also the 63 split window Vette, 327 fuel injected, 4 speed, posi rear end.

Sorry, there's nothing in the world that I could just leave alone.....maybe nothing drastic, but I'd have to change something.....

That 32 could use a dropped axle and some 16" wheels. No cutting involved, so it could be returned if I wanted, but there's always someting to be changed.

The early vette's and T birds could always benefit from some early Torque Thrust wheels

I wouldn't do anything to 50's to early 60's racing Ferraris. As well, I wouldn't mess with some historically important customs or hot rods.

To begin with, I don't consider bolting on different wheels "modifying" so that '60 Corvette above is still "stock" in my book, (as long as the hubcaps are on the wall in the garage.) ;)

I wouldn't modify any currently COMPLETE original or restored cars in visually original condition...

I wouldn't make a custom out of any four door cars* unless it was to make a two door out of them in the process.

This is Hollywierd, original looking four door cars can make money on movie sets.

I would make a "gasser" wannabe-racer-street-car out of a four door car, but NOT a two door.
Correct that, I personally wouldn't make a "gasser" wannabe-racer-street-car at all.
I thought they were silly in the '60's and my opinion hasn't changed for the better.
I wouldn't build one to actually race either because there are race cars that are faster and second place sucks.
Why build something that you know can be beat?

    * Exceptions would be cars like the '49-51 Mercury suicide rear four door but with that B pillar "fixed" in the chopping process, Caddy Broughams and '61-'64 Continentals.
I'd customize them if they were too incomplete to restore, and it wouldn't take much to be called "incomplete". ;)

Hmmmm... A '62 Olds 98 Convert... w/ 394... Somethin' like this.... I might have to have another one to throw a juice set up on and star wires though... But a stocker would be sweet...
    http://images03.olx.com/ui/1/14/89/8790589_2.jpg

Or a '47 Buick Roadmaster or Super kind of like this...
    http://www.vea.qc.ca/amphilotus/buickroadmaster47.jpg

    And a '66 Olds 442-
    http://nkazmers.tripod.com/442frontside1.jpg

    oh and a '67 Eldo....
    http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-1960-1969/1967-Cadillac-Eldorado-4.jpg

And these are a bit new but, a Buick GN, a twin tubro (factory) Supra MKIV, any G-Body Olds 442 or H/O, GMC Typhoon or Cyclone, and Dodge Dakota Shelby Vert...\

Should add a 63-5 Rivi... The lines are stuck in my head just like the lines of a '67 Eldo... They're just super sexy razor sharp body lines that leave an impression...

    56-7 Continental Mark II
    61-9 Continental
    69-71 Continental Mark III
    72-76 Continental Mark IV

I think I could resist the temptation to mess with a '59 Eldo too...

Oh and the only thing a '59 Impala or Elco could benefit from in my book is a juice set up, astros, or star wires, and a juice set up.. And metal flake lots of it... But I wouldn't do anything to a Red on Red '59...

Oh and tri five Nomads are cool stockers! I want one like my grandma's... '55 Nomad Shadow Gray/Coral w/ a 265 Power Pack...

I'll add more when I think of them!

There are a number of exotic imports that I'd like to own, and wouldn't modify. Staying on topic for this board, this is at the top of my list of don't-fuck-with-its:

My 59' Edsel! Since they only made 5,400 of them, I don't think there's that many left. Although it's got different paint and is bagged, it's nothing that can't be put back to original.

My dream car, a 1958 Edsel Ranger. Only thing not original on this one is the wheels.

Man I agree! I love that car!

  29. Any old original car that has survived this long without being modified should get a real long consideration before changing something.A very rare or expensive car should not be rodded, should be restored or put in a museum for future enjoyment.
