I'm building a rod and want a non tilt, no shifter, OLD looking steering column with GM splines. I currently have a GM truck Tilt unit but the tilt just ruins the look. I'm running a prewar GM steering wheel. Any suggestions as to what will work and look right. I can always build one but I'd rather not.
Don't need the steering box. I have a couple DD ujoints in the system going up to a Corvette IFS. Here is the car:
Take the wheel to your local muffler shop and have them bell the end of a piece of 1 1/2 exhaust tubing to match the bottom of your wheel. Find a lunched 50s steering box and harvest the shaft as close to the box as possible. Then all you need is a couple of bearings. There are some great tech threads on building a steering column here on the HAMB. I have harvested bearings from old columns also. Never **** can a bad steering box and column...lots of good parts inside even if the gears are toast.
i wanted to retain old school in my 32 chev. a friend gave me most of steering shaft out of early(late 30's) chev which gave me the GM spline to mount wheel, i used part of original column as cover which later shaft fit. thus i would suggest early chev column and shaft i don't remember year they did away with "key" and went to spline. I am sure another member will help. as to wheel to column hub, i used the head from a NEW toilet plunger to cover from column to base of new grant wood wheel. shaft in early chev is solid 3/4 so easy to DD. hope this gives you a couple of ideas.
I made one from an older Chev PU column... use the shaft and bearings, made the housing from a length of exhaust pipe.
