Dumb flathead ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by no6, Mar 13, 2010.

  1. I am green when it comes to flatheads, I know zilch. My question is I have a Thickstun intake for the Merc flathead. Where do I put the oil in when I fill the crankcase? I hope I do not have to remove the fuel pump every time. I have seen where people have bored a hole in the intake to install the filler tube but I won't do that. Thanks for the answers in advance.

  2. You need the earlier fuel pump stand with the oil cap/breather on top. Also need to have the correct pump push rod, others can be more specific, the last flathead I had was in 1964.

Bigger issue is, how does your flathead breathe? May want to do a search on here to see how important that is to avoid sludge build-up and options to fix it. There are lots of nuances to the ol' flatmotor, but your learning curve should be very steep using this place and www.fordbarn.com as resources.

  4. Yes that was the other question since the draft tube is eliminated also. Could I put a filler tube with a breather cap in the oil pan? I did it in the 70's with the 283's and 327's.

I've run several PM7's, they are my favorite intake. I run the early fuel pump stand like Flatiron suggested. I also put a single breather (like a moon 90 Degree) on the oilpan for breathing. I've never had a problem with this setup.

If you use the early fill and breather, you will be just fine. I've been running like this for close to 17 years now and the inside of the engine is as clean as the day I built it.

My 48 Merc 59ab has an early block letter Edelbrock dual hi-rise. It has the stock pump and breather. At some point in time someone drilled an extra hole about an 1 1/4 in diameter. The hole is in the front where a breather would go on the later engines. The hole was plugged with a cork when I bought the car. I always thought it was for extra breathing but it runs fine with the cork so I left it plugged.

Install a PVC valve in the valley under the intake and run thr early fuel pump stand with a breather cap

  9. Make sure you use the right pump rod, an old Nos would be great. The new ones fall apart sometimes. You can also make one easy. The new kind also seem to get wiped out faster, depending on engine of course. Mild or wild...

Dumb Flathead? - The Flathead knows everything it needs to - Seems as if someone else is at the low end of the learning curve.

Great! So when you're in a discussion and some wiseacre says, "Put a cork in it." You can reply, "Already did!" :D

  12. I already admitted that if you can read.
