I hate that the '47 is just sitting there so close to being done but... This last weekend was the first one I've had at home in over 2 months because of work etc. I should have been wrapping presents and stuff but I had to get SOMETHING done for my own sanity. I'm gonna finish the bobber for the SF Rod and Custom show and so it will be easy to get out of my way to work on the '47. Ok, enough bullshitting. For anyone who cares, here's what I got done this weekend. First, I slapped in some guides for the taillight wiring. They couldn't have been simpler; just 1/8" rod tacked in every so often. Then I painted it black because I was going to grind the paint off the other side next. The fender and tank got the grind and texture treatment with a Scotchbrite and flapdisk combo. After they were all pretty I set up the makeshift spraybooth (plastic tarps) and gave them a couple light coats of clear to keep the moisture from my hands and the air off the bare steel. After the clear dried I taped off the first step of the stripe and laid on a white base covered with a three color flake. The flake was Old School Flake brand; Ghost Fire, Trout and Gold. All three are basically an abalone type flake with a little more of a given color. Why three colors? So I could get it juuuust right. No, that's a lie. All I had was samples of the colors so it took all three samples to do the job. OK, I forgot to get some of the next steps but after the flake I let it dry over night. Next, I scuffed everything to give it some tooth and to smooth out the flake. Then I layed on the sides of the stripes using twin stripe striping tape from the local auto parts house. The stars were next. I had them cut in vinyl. Then I masked everything again and went to town with the metallic black. The white base and the metallic black were rattle cans from the paint and body store. After the black dried I peeled off all the masking junk and layed on a ton of clear. I'm pretty stoked on how it came out. There are a couple of minor flaws. Normally I would have tried to fix these flaws and subsequently fuck up the whole thing and then go around smashing things with a sledge hammer or something (stop laughing Jason). But this time I decided to just be happy with it as-is. I kept going in the garage all night to look at the pieces. I'm stoked. My nights this week will be spent putting everything back together. On Sunday I spent quality time with my oldest son(he's 26)digging out a 20's Stude frame and running gear.It was burried in a old lumberyard under a ton of rotting wood.Took us all day butwas totally fun.It's funny how a rusty old piece of crap caninspire a person,if they are a true car nut.The Stude is total crap but hopefully I can find someone who needs engineparts or something.I can't let stuff go to the scrapper.On Saturday I mocked up my body and cowl on my "woody".It's a totally wood body and cowl built like a canoe on mahogany ribs.It looks like an Aussie ute.I'm a big fat guy so I made the body fit me.Hopefully I'll get some pix to show soon. what did you do.

Hey where did you get those fricken fenders? They look an awful lot like some spare wheel covers I used to have!! Good to see you gettin some use of them. By the way I didn't get shit done this weekend. But I will be off work for 10 days starting Friday!!! Hope to get the 29 Tudor stipped and primed, and the brakes all plumbed!!!!

I extende my engine cradle so I can test fire my freshly rebuilt 390,(the motor has to have the bell housing to mount a starter, hence the extention) and built a wooden radiator support. I should be firing it up after Christmas. KK

If that bare metal under clear doesn't hold up and the clear yellows, blast it all off and treat the hell out of it w/ some Gibbs and repeat your process. Then it'll hold up Don't ask me how I know this.

If it starts coming off I'm just going to enjoy watching it rust and create its own paint job.
hey kirk my 29 roadster fighter plane was blasted da'd and cleared. didn't yellow and it lived outside. the only thing that came through was rust from the other side. i know a lot of people get really worried about clearing over bare metal but some times you just gotta say.... especially at this point, the swirley metal part is really cute, did you run out of paint or somethin? stevo
