I'm helping "Legend544" work on his custom '50 Ford coupe project (more on it soon) - we've mounted a shaved '51 trunklid (one with hidden hinges) and are to the point of hooking up a release mechanism . We're thinking of something simple (i.e. manual , not solenoid) to release it , like a hood/choke cable , and frenching the handle into the D.S. door jamb ... easy-beasy . The only snafu with a setup like that , is we need an extra long cable , like 8-9 feet , and a universal choke cable kit (that I've seen so far) are only like 5-6 feet . I've got a couple ideas to "make something work" , but we'd like to do it right the first time & run one long cable behind the panels , etc. like he wants to . Should work great once the right thing is located .

Anyone have any ideas for a long cable , or know of any extra long ones available ?? OR , have you come up with any creative solutions to this issue before ?? Any ideas to help out would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks in advance .

    (p.s. - I DID search & didn't see any similar thoughts)

Why don't you have a Morse cable made up?? There has to be a cable company around that can do it.

i really don't know the exact lenght, but some hondas and acuras have the trunk release next to the drivers front seat. one of those might work.

I had to look that one up ... had no idea what a Morse cable was , lol ! Good idea .

    Gonna look into it ...

    Brilliant idea !

Another good lead , thanks ...

I need an excuse to get to the bike shop ;) (I'm a "roadie") - I suppose my local shop has the cable that way , just need to figure out a handle .

Thanks to everyone so far !

  9. I use bicycle cable for my throttle cable works great. Most any truck shop should have the choke cable in several styes. The Morse cables will work even rolled up but can be a bear to engineer and can't be shortened. Usually comes in foot increments.

I went to Auto Zone & the only one the guy could find was a 5-foot one out of an accessory catalog . I'll have to stop by when my buddy Steve's working - I think he's the only one that knows what going on at that joint , lol !!

Again , thanks for the responses ... Viva la HAMB !

  12. The bike shop should also have "gnarps" cable stops with a setscrew like used on old Avid MTB brake. If not, they can order em from QBP.

I have a hood release cable from a newer 300/Charger/Magnum, brand new, PM me if you want me to pull it out and measure it or get some photos. I'll sell it real cheap or trade for something interesting!

I'll have to get Craig to do an accurate measurement to see just how long his cable has to be ... he may be interested if it's long enough .

    Hmmm ... PTO cable - I'll p*** the thought onto him .

I'll pull that cable out today since I'll be in the garage already, just to figure out how long it is, might not even be something you can use.

I did that to a friend's '48 Ford a while back , but unfortunately (in this instance) the gas filler door has been filled (along with the rear 1/4's being deseamed , the handles & stuff shaved etc ...)

Go to the HELP section in any auto parts. I picked up a 10 footer at Pep Boys. As I recall it only cost 6 bucks.

After spending all Sunday, trying to figure out how to hide the lever to open my trunk, and where to get the right parts, I said to myself,"let me go on the HAMB". Next week I will go on here first! Have my battery in the trunk so, I will be putting mine in the gas door. I will post pictures when done. Thanks for the help!

I found a 12 foot cable at O'Reilly's...part number 55195 under the "HELP" brand name. Under 10 bucks! Going to use it on the deck lid of my '52 Victoria. Will mount the pull handle in the rear seat riser on the driver's side...low and out of the way, but still handy.

    :)
