    I have a noise in the rearend of my 54 chevy (stock rearend). Sounded like a rough bearing. I pulled the axles out yesterday. Pulled the drivers side axle bearing and it has been spinning in the tube. Does anyone know of a good fix for this,or do I need another rearend?

    I never been into that job before and I am sure other more knowledgeable people will speak up. But if the tube is worn real bad and you can get to it with a mig, you might be able to weld it up a little, and then grind it down to fit the bearing, with a die grinder.
    Also check over at the chevytalk board, on the 49-54 forum, and ask those guys.

    Do they make an axle saver bearing for this rear?

    Check with a machine shop in your area. We have wekded up a few on the crankshaft welder and then turned them back to stock size before. Also like mentioned earlier, some companys offer a smaller o.d. bearing to go on the worn shaft.

    I've used the Loctite bearing retainer stuff and it works great. As I recall, there's a couple of different formulas, depending on the clearance. Get this stuff at a local bearing house.

    Just make sure everything is real clean and grease free before starting. Read & follow the instructions exactly and the 603 will work great for you.

    I have saved you, I am your only hope!

    {LOL, couldnt resist...}

  13. Take a sharp pin punch and but some divots on the tube where the race sits. I'd do a couple of dozen all around the tube, then go with the loctite.
