I have a noise in the rearend of my 54 chevy (stock rearend). Sounded like a rough bearing. I pulled the axles out yesterday. Pulled the drivers side axle bearing and it has been spinning in the tube. Does anyone know of a good fix for this,or do I need another rearend?
I never been into that job before and I am sure other more knowledgeable people will speak up. But if the tube is worn real bad and you can get to it with a mig, you might be able to weld it up a little, and then grind it down to fit the bearing, with a die grinder. Also check over at the chevytalk board, on the 49-54 forum, and ask those guys.
I think Loctite makes a product to bed bearing shells. http://www.henkelna.com/cps/rde/xch...________0000000389|pageIndex=0|action=search|
Check with a machine shop in your area. We have wekded up a few on the crankshaft welder and then turned them back to stock size before. Also like mentioned earlier, some companys offer a smaller o.d. bearing to go on the worn shaft.
I've used the Loctite bearing retainer stuff and it works great. As I recall, there's a couple of different formulas, depending on the clearance. Get this stuff at a local bearing house.
If you feel like driving a couple hours, Ive got one sitiing in front of my shop you can have. PM me if you want it.
Thanks alot for the offers and the advice! I am going to try the loctite and see how it goes. What a great bunch of guys!
Just make sure everything is real clean and grease free before starting. Read & follow the instructions exactly and the 603 will work great for you.
Take a sharp pin punch and but some divots on the tube where the race sits. I'd do a couple of dozen all around the tube, then go with the loctite. Bob
OZ...with bearing retainer and a NEW bearing you should be fine. but remember to get the housing clean and clear of oil...POP.
