Somedays you just feel lucky. The 292 in my daily driver 57 Ranchero is getting pretty tired so I was getting ready to go thru it. Not really looking forward to spending the $$$ to do it as parts for Y-blocks are not exactly cheap. Couple weeks ago I bought a 27 T roadster pick-up from topcat662 on here. Came with 302 with aod. Good motor but too new for my taste (gotta have a flatty in it!) so I threw the 302/ aod on craigslist. Asking $600 for a quick sale. A week and a half later, no takers. Get a call Sunday on the motor. This guy says he wants it for his 55 T-bird. When I asked him why he didn't want to put a Y-block in his car he tells me he just put a fresh rebuilt one in and hates it, not interstate friendly he says. Well, long story short, we ended up swapping! .040over 292, 3800 miles on it, later Holley 4 br. Has a receite for $2200 for the rebuild from a local machine shop. Plus he threw in another 292 core motor and a bunch of extra y-block parts! Even thou I pitched in $600 difference I can't believe he went for this. Quick cam change and I'll throw this in the Ranchero. Now maybe it will be road worthy enough to drive it to the HAMB drags in July!
Sweat deal! Used to drive a '55 T-Bird with a 292 and a 3 speed and it would scoot pretty good. Good times in that car!
Who did the engine machine work, Knighton's? When I lived in N.M. I used them for my personal machine work and rebuilt engines as well as for resale at the car dealerships that I worked at. Good quality parts and work. In about nine years of using them, only had two issues. Both taken care of quickly and painlessly. In fact, the engine in my 2+2 Pontiac has parts and machine work from Knighton's in it. Put it together in 88, installed in '92. Still driving it today.
I'm glad it all worked out for you and both parties got what they wanted. It doesn't get much better than that.
Engine Parts on 2nd rebuilt it right before they closed up. I didn't fare too well with Knightons, used them a while for my tow truck fleet. Be lucky if I got 20,000 miles out of one, most died between 12000 (warrentee) and 20,000. Good on their warrentee however, one truck got 3 motors put in before 12000 miles! Oh yeah, they did a 390 Ford for us, put 360 rods in one bank, 390 rods in the other. Ford guys will know, they don't even look the same. One side of the motor must of had 14-1 compression, those 360 rods were pushing the pistons 1/8' out of the holes! Too be fair, I never could find a machine shop that would do a quality build without costing a fortune. Guess it's always a matter of you get what you pay for.
