Going on a 1952 Chevy Deluxe. 79 camaro front clip with disc brakes and rear end. I think the rear end should be just right. Isn't it the same width? Or a little less? What would the gears likely be in it? Same bolt pattern? I know I am going to have to swap to transmission for open driveshaft. And I have a general knowledge of what it takes to swap the rear. Guess I really just need the info on the front end. Am I going to need to hack my frame up...or am I lucky enough that it will bolt in? Probably not. Thanks.
It most definatly will not bolt in. You also need to get a tape measure out and check tread width (wheel flange to wheel flange). If I remember correctly the Camaro is about 5" wider and makes it a unit you do not want to use. The Wizzard
See, now I was on 50chevy.com and they said that the following rear axles would work. * 55-57 Chevy Cars. * 68-72 Nova * 70-81 camaro What is the stock width of my torque tube rear axle? 60"?
Okay, so I just read up a bit on the front end swap. Might have to scratch that. Curious if the disc brakes would swap over to my stock setup. Could I be that lucky?
Get out your tape measure and go check. Yes rear axles are narrower than some front ends in many vehicles. I was talking about the front clip. I believe S-10 may be a better choice for your 52. The Wizzard
When you build a car, 99% of the time, you have to "make" parts work. I've never been "lucky" with swapping parts from more modern cars to earlier ones. You aways have to m***age, fabricate, fit things into place. Nothing just happens magically...
I would go measure...but I'm at work. I know there is someone on here that knows off the top of their head what the rear axle width is. Trying to get that info so I can pick up some parts on the way home.
Talked to a buddy of mine yesterday who bought a 51 that has a Camaro clip. It,s too wide and he needs a positive offset rim to clear the front fenders....
I understand. Having built myself several motorcycles, I know that nothing fits together. You have to "persuade" it a bit. What I was hoping for was someone to chime in and say "Yeah, that's a good swap, just keep your eye open for this, and this, and this." Or "No, far too much work for what it's worth. Maybe check out a front end off of this type of car." This board is a wealth of knowledge. Just trying to get a little bit of it.

yea dude your stock width should be 60". from what i've been told, a 55' to 57' chevy rear will bolt right in. my buddy has a 79' camaro rear under his 50' styline, and it bolted in but it is a lil too wide so he can't run his skirts. the line up pin is off center on our cars, so he had to flip his leaf springs backwards. he said it was pretty easy to do. his name on here is shanepietch. he is on my friend list. you might wanna send him a pm. i'm sure he can help answer alot of your questions seeing as he just did this swap.
No,you want´! Inner wheelbearing is a little too big, you need some work on the spindle, and outer bearing is way off. But, its possible to find bearings who could fit better, if you got right stores in the near, measure and search. I used Cutl*** discs, some small adjustment on inner bearing, and the original Cutl*** bearing fits. Outer i needed and whitemetal "spacer" made to me by Timken bearings. They have some in their sorage who could be roamed to fit. Good Luck with your build!
my 51 Pontiac frame was just one inch wider than the 88 S10 frame snout I installed... Wasn't that hard to do.
it can be quick and easy if you just keep the original frame. and drive it like an old car should drive. or just sell it and drive a 79 camaro
Always has to be one in every crowd. Yes he could do that and then probably spend a fair sum of cash to rebuild the front suspension "if" he has a front suspension on the car now that he can rebuild. For going low buck I'd think an S-10 or 78 up Chevelle style stub would probably work fine with a bit of fitting. You would have to do some t******* on the rear end out of a Chevelle style car though and then pick up a set of Moroso spring pads Like this http://www.jegs.com/i/Moroso/710/85090/10002/-1?CT=999 but you can get them at most O'rilley's, mount the axle under the 50.
I dont know if this will help or not, but if you buy the DVD Shake Rattle & Roll in the bonus features Ian Roussel puts a Camaro front clip on a '50 Ford Shoebox..by watching that I learned a lot about doing these swaps..the DVD's only $5 so it wont really hurt to give it a shot
I have 53 Chevy with a Nova rear end and subframe out of a 70 Nova. works fine,If you have never subframed a car you would be better off to have it done by a shop ,a wack-job subframe will cause alot of problems with tires,alignment and also look stupid as hell going down the road sideways.
