History WYO HOT ROD HISTORY SAVED!!! Custom Merc Dash

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Stutz, Mar 15, 2010.

  1. We had a '51 here for a while someone hacked up to fix another car that had a bad chop apparently. Anyhow they cut the door tops out and the entire B-post with a small portion of the roof and drip rail. Eventually we sold it to a guy on here who wanted to convert a sedan to a coupe and they came and took the top, door shells and quarters and left the rest of it - basically a frame and cowl at this point.

You could probably take everything that's left above the dirt line from the cowl to the deck lid opening, even though the top is hammered, but certainly the door tops, B-posts or whole quarter window frames at the least, maybe the rear window surround too. Too many guys trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear (a 4dr to 2dr conversion) to leave that stuff out there, someone will want it.

And probably if you cut the A posts at the base the rest will pull right off, or close to it, if it's that rotted where it's buried.

Edit: Looked at first pic again, looks like someone already hacked the back window surround out of it -

Cool save, its pretty common to find the old stuff laying around but to find one with actual history - thats really cool!
My buddy and I just pulled a '42 chevy fleetline home over the weekend. The thrill of the hunt is one of the funnest parts of this hobby I think...

  3. Thats for sure, its gets to be an obsession sometimes. Like this dash for example had been haunting me for several years... now I can relax about that one and think about the other crap i need and want to do.

Somebody still in this hobby/avocation around that neck of the woods must remember a striper who used that moniker. Find old duffers....

    nice save, thats really cool!

  6. I think that is why I need to talk to the cars former owner... my friend is literally the only old pinstriper around and he has never heard of him. he's been striping since the late early 70's and he doesnt know of a "Mickey Mouse" and is a real guy and not a cartoon icon

  10. I'm all about the history and what have you, but I think I'd ebay that bitch. 1949,50,51, Merc, flathead, 32, 33, 34, hot rod, rat rod, model a, custom, chopped, channeled, von dutch, ed roth, gene winfield, pinstriped, barn find, survivor dash.

  11. Great story!!!! Thanks for sharing the pictures.Do you have any information on the guy who striped it?Might be interesting to try and track him down;I'm sure he would get a kick out of seeing how long his work survived.

Didn't Mickey Mouse do mostly "rat rods"? lol Just yanking your chain. Cool find, even cooler you took the time to save it.

  13. HAahahahahha, you forgot patina, and Boyd.

  14. There is a good chance this dash striped in the late fifties or early sixties... That gunna be a challenge but I'm going to give it a go.

  15. Dude. What if it really was striped by Mickey fuckin' Mouse? Like thee Mickey Mouse?!! You might have some major shit there. I'll bet Epcot would be all over it. I'm just saying, it might be worth looking into. And, for the naysayers, Mickey Mouse has to be real, he has a goddamned birthday every year.

Wow that Merc is really low. Does it have air bags on it ?

  19. I think those are called dirtbags.

  20. Ha ha. I beleive you're right.

  21. Yeah, but when they dumped it there, it would be like dumping some late model turd in a ditch now.

Sort of, but 49-51 Merc.s have always been cool. Rebel Without A Cause embedded them in Hot Rodding.

  25. Like putting a Honda Civic with fucking nitrious and a god damned wing in a ditch. makes me wanna puke. both instances. the merc because... why the fuck, and the Honda because... why the fuck not sooner.

  26. Not unless they werent exposed to air and water. that would be like finding Noahs Arc in modern day Argentina! JK ;)

  27. Imagine what would happen if you hauled that whole thing out and stuck it in your front yard, just what's left above the dirt (since that's all that's left anyhow)....

  28. Man that would be Chaos... and the best kind of Chaos.
