My 50 chevrolet had a bad case of chatter ( when you let out the clutch and the car jerkes, horribly). SO I figured it was the flywheel. So I took of the flywheel and replaced the clutch, throwout bearing, pressure plate, Everything. I put it all back together and it was fixed for about a day. Then she started jerking again. I have no idea and need your guys help. Do you think it was because I didnt have the flywheel turned. Thanks
The flywheel I figured was ok because it wasn't new. I got it from my buddy who had it in his car and it was fine. Do you still think it is the flywheel.
No, sorry, I was just lying. I don't think we would have said that you should have resurfaced the flywheel unless we thought you should have resurfaced the flywheel.
59 BUG...WOW WVENFIELD, testy. unfortunately it probably is the flywheel. listen even if they turn it, and they don't get it REAL smooth. then brother the problem isn't fixed. how do you know it's smooth enough, it will be almost slick...POP.
LOL, sorry but I've never seen clutch chatter get fixed without addressing the flywheel. I imagine others have but if you replace everything except the flywheel and it still chatters, that leaves.............?
I did many clutches without touching the flywheels and they had very little to no chatter. This guy's car is jumping up and down, right? Check out the pilot bearing and the tranny input bearing. And the driveshaft bush mentioned above. And the motor mounts and all the stuff mentioned in repair manuals for chattering clutch.
I would say motor mounts are shot. If they are not holding the engine in place, you can get back and forth movement. And it shows up as chatter.
Many things can cause chatter,In one case,I had the main shaft of tranny had enough rust build-up on it ,the clutch disc would not slide easily on the splines..so dont always assume its the flywheel !!! Henry Ford put those stay rods on flatheads to eliminate chatter, altho most were never put back as they were hell to stab
Motor mounts, crooked bellhousing, bad pilot bearing, off center transmission, oily clutch disc, or glazed/crazed flywheel all contribute to the problem.
Hundreds of thousands of clutches have been replaced without touching the flywheel. My point is that if you are replacing your clutch because of chatter, then while you have it apart, resuface the flywheel.
The mounts are good and yes it is an enclosed drive shaft. I'm gonna try the flywheel and hope it works. If you have more info about the bushings in the torque tube then that could be it too I guess. Man it just feels like the clutch is grabbing and then letting go and then grabbing again, make the car jump like crazy.
The fact that you said it was fixed for a day makes me think the disc is getting contaminated with oil. Was the old disc oil soaked?
DOUBLE CHECK THE SPRINGS IN THE CLUTCH DISC HUB. When you get it apart, take the cluth disc and shake it. If you can hear the springs rattle, then the disc is bad. You can even just grab the springs in the center hub and see if you can move them back and forth. If they are loose, this can cause the grabbing/shake you explained. I've seen many over the years that were bad right out of the box. A lot of reconditioned ones have this problem. When I sold clutches, I'd open them right on the counter in front of the customer to check them before even letting them out the door. You'd be suprised, as our clutch rep was, at how many of them are loose right off the shelf. So double check yours while it is apart...would hate to hear that you had the flywheel resurfaced, put it back together...and still chatters!!
You didnt have something "hard" to stick in it to keep it quiet ? Kinda hard to yap when their mouth is full
I was driving at the time.....hell i at least slowed down to 25 before she rolled out with her chompers running at such a high rate of speed i didnt feel like taking that kind of chance
