I have a 50 chevy deluxe that has been chattering horribly. I replaced the clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throwout bearing, everything. It must be either the tranny mount or the drive shaft. When I put it all back together I noticed the drive shaft could move up and down by hand, like it has play. Dont know it that is normal or what. I am racking my brain, any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you mean the inner driveshaft would move inside the torque tube, when not connected to the trans, I don't think that is a problem. When the inner shaft is engaged in the U-joint, and the torque tube is attached to the trans, there is no longer any relative movement unless the u-jouint has excessive wear.

I think you may be on the right track to consider the engine and trans mounts. Any movement of the engine/trans upon cluch engagement can contribute to clutch chatter.

  4. There is a bushing inside the torque tube and they make what is called an okie bushing that you just drive in behind the original bushing you can get them at chevs of the 40's or the filling station if this is an original car you might swing over the vcca.org and ask the dudes over there they have several guys over there that could help ya out also.

When the drive shaft is hooked to the trans I can move it up and down.

Perhaps, but the only way you would know that is because you have not yet attached the bell joint to the trans case, which would then prevent the movement you are seeing when it IS NOT connected.

Tims37chevy may very well be correct about the bushing..........it's been awhile since I was actually inside one these things...... did have first hand experience with this stuff 40+ years ago.
