Seems you always see the temp gauge sending unit threaded into the bigger threaded adapter. Is there a reason? I need to tap intake for the sender and would rather not use the adapter but tap for the smaller sending unit threads IF it doesn't make any difference in operation. Thanks

No reason except to fit the bigger hole. Tap away, screw it in. Dont use pipe dope/teflon on some or all of the senders because they actually ground throught the block.

Make sure you have enough depth without the adapter.

I use loct***e pipe thread sealant, i've never had a problem with the ground, it's the stuff in the small white tube, it seems to squeeze out on the high point on the threads. several people make the same stuff, stay away from teflon tape though.
