Has anyone chopped the top on a '56 Ford Fairlane 4dr sedan? Is it very hard? Any instructions or ideas? This is something I was thinking about doing to mine. Also, I thought about making it a convertible, if the chop didn't go over, but will it be stable enough?
There is probably a reason you've never seen another one done. The newer the car,the harder they are to chop.
Personally, I don't think that those 50s cars with vertical A pillars look right when they are chopped. Here is a pic, anyway. It still looks good, but I prefer the stock look. Unless you go balls out crazy and do a full custom job.
I am a true believer in restoring to bone-stock original, but, I wanted to do something different than the others, and my son wanted a cooool ride. I really like the black ford pic you sent first. If only mine was a hardtop.
Personally,That would be a lotta work for a 4 door. You still could make a cool custom out of it without the chop. With a good side view, some of the photoshoppers here are ace.Cars of that vintage work well with a Watson style paint job, with long horizontal panels.A good 4" drop will instantly put it in the "cool".Sparky
I agree a chop would be more work then it would be worth. BUT you could wack the top off, chop the windsheild and put a carson top on it . I've done that before on a few 4door Mercs. As far as windows go, you can either create slid channels, or just cap them off.
there is a pink and black 4 dr 55 or 6 ford in sacramento that was done well. took 3 or 4? inches out. i think it looks great. what have you got to lose. cut that mother****er!! ha ha.
Hello 1EVIL51, Carson top, didn't think about that. Do you have any pictures of the ones you did so I can see what it would look like? How about the time to do it and about a ruff cost? Thanks
I will try to post pics later, I am not computer savy when it comes to anything more than looking online . As far as cost, well just the blades, material, and time. I got the carson top from Merc.John in the Riverside area for $700. bucks Thought that was cheaper then trying to create one myself.
