I need some help figuring out if I got my motor far enough forward in my 29 Sedan. I have a short water pump and have about 4 inches between where the pump pulley bolts on and the edge of the front crossmember. It looks to me like it is in the right place but the back of the valve covers and the distributor are into the firewall more than I thought they should be. I plan on putting a 4" recessed firewall in it but it will still not be enough to clear the distributor. I am using a Pete and Jakes standard A frame but even as it sits in the pics the body need to move 1 1/2 to 2" farther forward to line up with the body mounting holes in the frame. Am I in trouble here or will I have to make a custom firewall for it all to work out. The cowl will have to be notched to make room for the back exhaust port pipe on my Lake Headers also. Something is wrong and I am not sure what it is.
The best way to do this is to install your rad and the fan that you are going to use! I think the thinest fan you can get is 2 5/8 inches thick at the centre. This will dictate where the engine can mount. I beleive yours could be moved forward possibly 2 inches! Just my 2 cents! Hope it helps! Grant Schwartz
2" is about what I need for a 4" recess to work but I don't have the radiator yet, it is another expensive piece I need to purchase. Thanks
I would wait until I got the radiator and fan in place also. There is always time to do it over................................. Of course.
Got anybody you can borrow a radiator from? You really need all the major pieces in place before you can continue...why not call P&J?... they should be able to help.
I'd wait for the radiator ***sembly before setting the engine. I did a 29 sedan quite a few years ago for my dad, and I think there was less than 2" from the back of the front crossmember to the harmonic balancer on the crank. So from that, I'd say you can easily go ahead 2" at least...but I'd sure wait for a radiator. Maybe you can find someone with a radiator you can borrow...hell a stock one will work for placement purposes.
I do have a stock one. Already planned on getting it off the original ch***is tomorrow. I know the new radiator will be thicker but the original should give me a good idea on how close I am. Not going to move anything until I get the real radiator but that will probably be a month or 2. Thanks
Hey Donnie, if you are using a aftermarket radiator, they should be able to provide a diemension from the side mounts to compare to the stock unit you have, this should be able to give a reference point. Yes, it appears the third time is a charm And everything looks so good too! Two steps forward, one step back, ah yes, the joy of doing it yourself!
all you need is 2" from the center of the front crossmember (spring hole) to the fan blade. It is tight but will work ..go 2 1/2 if you want plenty of room. - gary
my stock wheelbase full fendered `28 tudor sedan with a Walker radiator has a 3" recessed firewall. it's hard to tell by the pictures , but my eyeball engineering says that your motor is a bit far back . when you buy a ch***is from someone , they put the motor mounts where they think they should be...that's why i always mock up the motor/firewall/radiator and put the mounts where i want them
Thanks guys. I have to learn to quit jumping ahead of my self but I have no experience to lean on. Nothing like learning the hard way!!!!!!!!!!
