i am mocking up the 36 ford coupe for fit before the final paint. all along i figured on the small block chevy to fit by using an elec fan. i discover now that even tho i am using a short pump that i still only have a 1/2 inch clearance between the pump and radiator. my pump measures 5 7/8 . i am told that there is an even shorter style pump that was used on an early 60's chevy 283 that may give me a couple more inches of clearance. if a pump such as this still is available, does anyone know what specific part i should ask for. the advanced auto people cant give me dimensions but are very glad to order something if i can be abit more specific.
I had a similer issue but it began with to small a fan and no room between a Moroso electric water pump... Below are pictures of my solution. No problem with heat now. Beware it is not pretty so you need to run full tin. Also I have early camel hump heads with no holes so I had to build a pump mount to utilize the front block holes... If needed I have more detailed pictures and I can take a few more shots of it completed.
thanks for the info. i checked out a couple elec pumps. a meziere pump measures 3 in. overall depth. if my walker elec fan is 2 1/2 at the center it will work great. a mechanical fan is definately out of the question .
Keep moving the motor back until ya have enought clearance! (Well that's what I did when fitting the 460 to my '37.)
I used the 55GPM remote pump off set to the p***enger side, with 2 -16 oring outlets. So far I am happy.. It was quite a project to get all of the **** to fit.. Most likely I have way less room than your 36 so it should be an easier fit.
Not sure if you have room on a 36 or not, but I did a 40 merc with a 406 sbc, and just run a "pusher" electric fan on the front of the radiator. You really have to get close to the grille to look through and see the fan, it is black and so is the radiator so it is hidden quite nice. It works fine. The car even has A/C and with the 406 it does not overheat at all. There is less than 1 1/2" clearance between the waterpump pulley and the radiator, but it doesn't seem to matter at all.
