one old way is to take your ground to the battery.

It can be a ton of things, ignition wires, non-resistor plugs, picking up noise from wiring that is close to the radio. Sometimes you can put a filter on the power side and get rid of it, but I try to track down the problem...

You need to run spiral-wound or induction-type plug wires. You might also need to run a noise suppressor on the ignition and generator/alternator.

Yep. Also, run shielded power and ground wire to the radio if you have some.

thanks for the quick response... my plug wires are new, body is grounded, engine is grounded, radio is grounded, i just hooked up a noise suppressor in-line with my power lead but it makes a loud noise every few seconds i have the radio on. if i hook it up the other way radio dosnt come on. i know im not doing something right. the radio power is coming off the back of my guages, is this ok? do i need to run that wire some where else?

Do you have a fuse box? If so you can run one from an acc. circuit. I'd be worried about pulling power from the back of the gauges, what is the power there for? lights? amps?

You need what is called a ground loop isolator. You can pick one up anywhere that sells stereo stuff, even Wal-Mart. They go for around 25 bucks and will cure 95% of your problem.

    Good luck, -Abone.

it has a 12 volt system, has cl***ic instrument guages, pretty sure there 12 v as well. the noise suppressor says:
    model: cap 50m
    16vdc 50,000 mf computer grade
    electrolytic capacitor
i have no ides if its even good, a buddy gave it to me, told me to hook it in-line w/ the power wire. one way i hook it up the radio works, but it makes a loud noise every few minutes. the other way i hook it up, the radio dosnt even come on.

BACK in the day we just ran a condensor off coil and that cured the problem or you can run positive power wire to battery with fusible link and good ground.either way works.
