How many leafs to lower the back of a Model A?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Groucho, Mar 22, 2010.

  1. I need to lower my Gasser Model A 1 1/2-2 inches in the rear. Which leafs do you think I need to remove? I really don't want to do this twice. Thank you

I would suggest you remove 1 of them down about 3rd in the pack from the top, than skip one and remove the next one..only removing 2..than set her back down and see what you got.
and you do know that if you get it right on the first try, your taking all the fun out of it.:D

I got sick of experimenting - the clamping, and tightening and wondering if today was the day the spring would kill me...

I bought the superslide after all of that and it truly is a nice product.

I am about to do the same thing so I will let you know what I come up with, I want about an inch to inch and a half lower in the rear but to retain some original ride quality.

Well, I was planning on the weekend but go for it I guess! I just got called back to work, was laid off, and start back up tomorrow so I will not be getting to it, I think. If you try it, let me know what you end up with. Love the coupe by the way, very bitchin!!

My guess is #2 and 4 as I have been contemplating this as well.

Do that and let me know if I was wrong ok?

I won't tell you how many leafs to take out (just in case I'm wrong)...but I can tell you from experience if it looks "perfect" when you set it down, it's probably not. Even if you bounce the back of the car up and down....they always seem to settle some more when you drive it and it gets lower....just my 2 cents.

Deuc3wcpe, they do seem to settle so i would say take out two, follow Von Rig Fink, that is what I am going to do nd see what happens and adjust it from there.

Put a t spring on it and forget about it.

I did a t and removed two springs and on bumps like railroad tracks, it bottoms out. You might not like the ride but if just for track use, pull the top and the third from top. That won't lower you as much as you want without reversing the eyes on the a spring or just putting a t spring on it.

  18. Mine had #2 and #4 removed, counting from the top. That should do it.

Here's a before and after on my roadster. The first pic is with a reversed eye Model A spring. The second is the same spring with the top three leaves removed and cut down to 12" long each then placed in the bottom of the stack moving the main leaf up. Probably lowered it 3.5"-4".

I've heard about guys doing it this way...are the 12" leafs on the bottom of the stack long enough to get all the way under the U-bolt blocks?

2 spring should get you were you want but hang on to them you might need them six months down the road if the settle in too much. Each car is diffrent as far as weight on the rear spring and each spring is diffrent on how much they will settle it is all just a crap shoot.

  22. Is the spring new or original ? The originals will sag more than new of course but I would take out 3 and 5 from the top or if you want to just take one then I'd take out 4.
Everyone has done it more than once trying to get where you want to be. I just did my front again this year and have it down to about 45 minutes total. This is the rear from year before last...

Since we're talking springs..............can anyone ID the springs in this picture.

I was told from the person that I purchased these springs that the top one was used on a roadster and it ran fine.
As you can see a few leafs have been removed. I plan on using it on my '30 Sport Coupe Model A.
It will be quite some time before it will be on the road though..............

I don't think there are more than five leafs in anything I have. Take out the two below the top one is what I've done, see what happens. Or every other. Other people say take out every other leaf but not the one just above the main leaf keeping the strongest leaves in place. This is an interesting subject, one that's never been fully explored here on the Hamb. There must be someone here who knows about spring rates from an engineering standpoint with regard to which would be most efficient.

Be prepared to do this more than once so you don't get pissed when you have to take everything apart again.

If you want to lower it an inch and a half, just lower it an inch cause it will settle over time.

Groucho find a T spring and you'll get easily 2" out of it if not 3" without taking any leaves out. No guess work, just did it on mine. If you want to go lower take the third from the bottom/main leaf out. Even lower skip one and take it out. By then though the rear will be bumping the shackles.

This is a T spring with the ends bent up and 7:50-16's. But I think you are going for a little higher on yours. The T spring will sit up about 2" from here and still let light around the tire. This was a lucky shot and was done in one go round.

He's right, but remember it will settle, maybe an inch but since it's a gasser there will be a lot of stress on the rear when you slip the clutch so keep all the lower leaves you can. Report back, please.

Just remember that the shorter the leaf the stiffer it is... I think I took 3 leaves out of the A I mocked up a few years ago... it sat pretty nice that way but it never got out of the garage before I parted it out so I can't tell you how well it worked.

  30. Someone once told me the short leafs are for height, and the long ones are for ride.. Also heard that you take every second leaf out, although i'm yet to do it either.
