Putting together a fresh 292 for my daily driver 57 Ranchero. Got to hot rod it up a bit so it's getting a cam, 4 barrel, ect. I was looking at the heads and can't help but think a little porting would be a big help. I've never have done a set of Y-block heads before, any tips to p*** along? More importantly, anything I need to be carefull about? I'm not planning on hogging them out too much, more of just clean and polish but I'd sure hate to hit a water jacket or something real quick. FWIW the heads are 57 ECZ-Gs.
Tom Eaton and John Mummert are two Y-block experts. They hang out here: http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/ Port matching the exhaust exits (but not going crazy helps alot as well as a simple smoothing of the bowl area just under the seat. The Y-block ports are high and flow as good as any SBC head of the same vintage, especially the big valve G heads. The best thing you could do is join the forum, do a quick search and then maybe cut and paste your question there. There is alot of good info there. Mummert is busy but will field questions and get back to when he can. Ted Eaton always gets back pretty quick (a day or so). Both guys have great advice and share the wealth with fellow Y-block enthusiasts. Good luck with it! -Bigchief.
I looked into the intake ports on the Y block head I put on my Plymouth and thought "How is this possable?" Then I sent it off to extrude hone. Got nice smouth intake ports. Did the exhaust as above. First head I went to far on so don't get carried away.
There's a guy on here his username is mctim64, hopefully he'll chime in. He builds some nice Y blocks. I'm sure he's got some good advice.
