[ QUOTE ] Uh? thanks [/ QUOTE ] well, who were you asking for prices? you are gonna haveta ask the guy selling them, Right?
There's been new interest in this. American Rodder did a how-to article but just listed the alternator as industrial tractor. We had a Yanmar diesel in the shop with an alternator that might work and looked just like the article. Powermaster is now selling the PowerGEN alternator in generator case. Maybe they will have enough sales volume to get the price down.
About any Suzuki M/Cycle had these small alternators [in the eighties].......bought this one for 15 bucks....... The gear just bolts on and case has three bolt holes for mounting......
Here is a link to a pic and a little info on the one powermaster is doing. You'll have to scroll down the page just a little. No info on price but if it's like the rest of their stuff it should be pretty dependable. http://www.motorsportsblog.com/weblog/automotive_classic/
Some Mitsubishi alternaters can be housed in an early Ford case..I think the Ford case needs to be machined to a larger ID..or the jap unit needs to be turned down..uses a few set screws to secure the unit inside of the case...anyway it works...and with salvage parts, too.
This has come up before...something I may try in the future out of curiosity than anything else. I like generators! But if I do it, I'll likely use one of Red's finned generator covers to help with the heat
The problem with the units that are being done by inserting a milled down units inside a generator case is the heat. The are not able to move enough air and the output capacity is limited. The unit PM is doing runs a good 20 degrees coller than an 10SI, but they are not inserting a unit inside. There were several HAMBers that provided input on the PM design.
I for one cant wait to get my new Powermaster one to play with! Any update on the timeframe for the GM ones?
