Help, I got some 97s to rebuild and the person had them powder coated and got it on the flange face..How do I remove just on the flanges..I tried to s****, didn't work well.. This has to be the worst powder coating I've even seen. Six 97s that look bad.. Thanks Duane.
It's going to take sandpaper or a file. I recently had my exhaust manifolds powder coated and the flat mounting surface had big globs of powder coat much like runs in paint,,,I used a grinder to remove the offending material. HRP
score a line with a razor blade or file a border around the area to be cleaned off to reduce the chance of large flakes poping off first then go at it.
if it was done right it will not peel. we use a very high temp oven to burn pc off,.... there are chemicals like zip strip that will take it off. other then than, blast, sand, file.....
X 2 on the burn off ! our local powdercoater here puts the parts into an oven and burns the powdercoat off then a quick blast with a powerwasher and its clean metal once again !
When I screw up a coating job I either super heat it in the oven or char it with a torch. The heat kills the powder and it comes right off.
regular paint stripper will work too, you will have to let it sit for a while and then it will peel like regular paint CN
I wouldn't recommend a burn off oven or heating with a torch. That carb is made out of zinc that melts at about 800 degrees. Burn off ovens run between 600 & 700 degrees. Even if you don't melt it it will probably sag. Use the brush on paint remover. If your just trying to clean up the gasket surfaces, what you can't get with a razor blade, you might have to use a small dremmel tool. Have fun!!
