Hey guys I just started to have trouble with my 86 T5 camaro transmission. Transmission doesn't want to shift into reverse. THis is on the project 32. I back the car out from behind the shed every spring break to get some work accomplished on her. I drove the car up and down the street went through just 1 and 2 gear. down to my drive way i put her in reverse peel the tire a little in reverse. After putting a smile on pops face i drove here done the street. I decided to turn around because i didnt want to piss the neighbors of so i tried put the car in reverse Gears grinded a bit when i tried puting her in reverse. I know the clutch was fully disengage when i tried shifting. What could the problem be. I pulled the transmission shaft off and swap the t5 camaro for a s10 tailshaft. I also am running ATF in the t5 like i was told too.. THe gears looked find when i saw them.
There are a lot of t-5's out there that have that problem. I'm not 100% sure what causes it, but s10's, camaros, firebirds, etc I've had have done it. A buddy of mine that works at a trans shop told me to just put it in 1st gear first, then it will slip right into reve****. Seems to always work without grinding when I do that....
333 Half Evil has the most likely cause in post #4 above. What was the condition of the T5 before? New, Rebuilt, Good Used, Unknown? Also, it doesn't take much clutch engagement to cause issues - especially for reverse - if the pedal engagement is at the low end, this could be contributing.
Ernie, i have no idea about the condition of the ****** just that the teeth inside looked clean and non worn. At one point i could shift into any gears
Could be input bearing w/some play. I like to shim them to the tight end of the tolerances, but that's true of most manual ******s... Could be clutch wear as well. Doesn't take much. If you shift into 1st before shifting to Rev, does it help?
Not sure if i mentioned but at one point i couldn't **** into any gear. Hmm well. Its a 250ci straight 6 with a T-5 camaro with s10 tailshaft. Could it have anything to do with me swapping the tailshaft. The talk shaft housing and **** folk and top cover came from a t-5 i picked from so kid. He could have be rough on the folk and bend it right. Driving the car around the property since then was down in 1st. Well let me ask this if I pull the top cover which the shift folks are part of and look at it will i be able to pick out a bend shift rod or .. what should i look for there. I have a used clutch pressure plate. New throughout bear. Probably should install a new clutch.
Mine got hard to shift for a while, actualy a long time , till noticed the clutch mite need to be adjusted, Holy **** did that help. Mite not be tour problem, I would check it first thought. They definatly need a fully disengauged clutch to shift, especialy reverse.
If it ever worked well, no. It's unlikely anyway. More likely is input bearing or pilot bushing/bearing/bellhousing alignment. Unless it's grossly bent, you probably won't be able to see it.
Its your syncro`s going up,Ive owned 2 mustangs that had t-5`s,and that was the fisrt symptom before 3rd gear broke on one and second gear syncro went out on the other,A friend of mine is a service manager at a ford dealership and said there is a trick to do that will tell if your syncros are starting to go out-with car running and with the parking brake on put the car in first -leave it there for 5 seconds attemp to put in reverse if it doesnt go its your syncro`s.If you plan on a rebuild dont waist your money check out D and D transmissions you can by a tremic 3650 for 999.99 rebuilt. These can handle 365 foot pounds of torque, wich is way more that a stock t-5 can handle.Im going to c if I can find there number for ya
The number is 248-735-6220,call them and ask about rebuilt 3650`s or 3550`s.D&DPercmance.com I have ordered 3 transmisions from them through out the last ten years.I have nothn but good things to sat bout these guys. These guys know a lot about Tremics, good luck with your fix and stay away from stock t-5`s if you like to drive hard they do not hold up.If its your pilot bearing you will def hear it,Adjusting the clutch cable most likely is only going to be temp fix,now if you do replace it while its out do the pilot bearing, rear main seal and clutch if its visably worn and reserface the flywheel.I wound up pulling the trans again after I just replaced the clutch and installed a fire wall adjuster thinking that would fix my shifting problems. That transmission broke 3 months later and had to replace it.
