Old Ford Gearbox I/D

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Taildraggin, Dec 23, 2004.

  1. Just picked up an old 59 flathead complete with gearbox.
Any idea what it is, and whats its like.
Its got an open drive so maybe its a truck gearbox and might not be any good for the 26 RPU we are putting together.

You are right, it's a BIG truck box. Not sure of the year, but approx 42-48. Gear ratio is probably too low for street use in a T.

4 spd, truck, granny low, 42 and newer This can be a desirable transmission for an old timey truck, with a smallblock chevy engine. The chevy probably wont break this trans and its open drive. The pic shows a 6 bolt access panel on the lower right side. This is where the power take off fits. If anyone has a power take off 1929 to 1947, I will buy it. I see that taildraggin is in England. Betcha this is a 42 engine/trans. It has a rebuilders tag on it.

Even if you don't use the box (and you probably shouldn't - 1st gear is all but useless unless you've got a lorry!), take the time to pull the front mini-bellhousing off the front of the tranny. Those make great adapters for other transmissions requiring only a flatplate adapter to be machined up...

  6. I thought it might be an old truck trans.
Manyolcars. Yes it has got a rebuild tag on it but water got into two of the bores and they are rusted up quite bad.
valves are rusted in on them as well but the rest is real good. Its a shame it was left outside sometime in its life [IMG].
Have to try and locate a transmission now.

You should be able to adapt damn near any tranny with that 4spd front...

FlatE the photo shows standard 42 type engine/trans. The separate bell housing was about 1948-53?

Ernie, I have a 4 speed similar to that, from a lorry/truck. It does not have a separate bellhousing. Can't see for sure, but the pics above seem to be similar to mine, ie not a separate bell. Can anyone say what years had the separate bell housing??

Arrgh! You're right - I didn't look closely, just assumed it was the later one....for those interested, here's what one would look like when unbolted

  11. I have one just like it behind my 8ba, came out of a 51 f-1, I'll check to see if it has the access panel, Manyolcars, if it does, you have dibs.

The mounting plate has already been spoken for.

I believe that the separate bell was on 1948+ trucks abd 1949 + cars.
