I am planing on running a 39 trans, with a 1941 Mercury Flathead. In Model A rails. Vern Tardel is not doing a centre crossmember anymore? What should i do? Is there any other companys that make a simliar item? The car will be RHD for australia.

I can't help with repop 32 crossmembers, but I can suggest using a f1 truck crossmember and pedals - works great and is very traditional - all Ford! There is a lot of info here on the HAMB about it.

I ran into that problem myself.... I found a certain post about about a sport coupe hop up where the owner built his own...That's about the time I happened to glance at a cracked model A rear crossmember I had laying around and decided to make it my center cross member.. remember this is hot rodding not rocket surgery.. use what's between your ears.

There's a guy on ebay selling whittled down k-members for an Av8. Very similar to Verns.

    I believe Dagel's makes an X-member...much stronger.

I havean f1 in mine. It is pretty easy to adapt and is set up for the pedals on either side. You will want to use the F1 pedals as well.

    Here is the Dagel's:

The X member is superior to the K member for torsional rigidity...the Model-A frame is significantly smaller than the later V8 frames.

Yes, it's been done countless times, as has the F1, but the 33-34 X-member is a good upgrade over the 32 K-member (especially given the price of 32 parts). The Dagels is a good compromise again.

First thing i'd do is get that book: "How to build a traditonal Hot Rod" by Tardel and Bishop. Gives good insight on how to solve many problems. I'm running a RHD here in the states. Lots of challenges here, PM me for solutions.

Contact MnStumpjumper. He makes them. Fit is perfect and believe it or not think he has a Right hand drive one......

  12. I cut down a nice 32 K-member from a RHD car for my AV8. The dimensions in the book where spot on for the crossmember part but I did my legs differently. LOTS of work but I am very happy with the results. If I had to do it all over I'd use an F1 or 33/34 X-member mainly for economic purposes. Jason...

I used an original 32 crossmember and it works great. The great thing about it is all the pedals, transmission, e brake all bolt togeather with no modifacation.

Has anyone done later X-members in an A, like a 35 and later style? Are they too big?

The later frames are taller, so you have to trim the later X-members where they rivit/weld onto the A frame.

That's why a custom made one like Dagel's makes so much sense for most folks...

I did a '37 X in a '32 frame for my 27 T, a lot of work, but sure looks slick, pretty straight forward, the rear legs are too narrow and didnt meet before the kickup so i had to piecut them so they were an inch or two wider, and height wise they are a little too tall even for '32 rails and need to be split and narrowed

I can honestly say if you feel good with your metal working skills, they work Good in a '32 but i probably wouldnt put one in a model a frame

I know this is an old thread but I am bumping it to the top because I think it is a good one.
