whats the best way to set these rears up for later (easier to find) brakes... I read that if youre narrowing to go with an econoline backing plate.. seems like a good idea. what if you arent narrowing???

I don't think it is a direct bolt in. You will need to take your yoke and shaft to a driveline shop for measurement (or do it yourself) and they will find the right cross for you.

That explains why my splines were so short and the axles looked like they were cut off.
I must have a Pontiac housing, its on stock spring pads in my '57 Chevy!
Thanks for all the helpful info...
I went with a buddy to look at some early Ford parts and saw an aluminum 3rd member on the floor. The guy said it was for a 9" Ford and I could just take it! Its a Mickey Thompson center section with 4.30 gears, but no posi (it just says Thompson so it may be an early model). Made my weekend!

damn ... it turned out to be a '55... i guess ill keep shopping haha

  8. I had a '56 Pontiac peg leg in my '36 before I found the '63 Olds rearend.
The '56 was tired and I couldnt get any parts for it any more.
The '58-'64 is far easier to service.

Would one of those 59 olds rear ends be available as pumpkin only? That's all I need. Cheers, Russie.

Applecrate, would you be interested in parting with one of those Pontiac/Olds pumpkins? I need a 29 spine, 3.42 (or close to that) for a 57/58 axle housing. Cheers, Russie.

I have a '61 okds rear 55 miles from you,$150 loaded. PM me if you want it.

  12. What's wrong with the rear end in your 55. It is a drop-out (pumkin) type and plenty strong enough for up to 600 horse or more? Plus, you can find gears for it up to and including 6:00's.

  13. I still have a set of axles and an open carrier assembly with gears.
    $100 everything.
