Picked up some nice center lines that would fit on my rotors only if the studs where longer. Can i just replace the studs with longer ones or is that not a good idea.
Sure you don't just need the "mag wheel" style lug nut, rather than tapered seat? ones If I remember correctly, that is what they use. If you lug holes look like this: Then you need the mag-style lug nuts. The studs do not need to stick out past the wheel surface for those to work, like tapered ones do.
hmm. not sure, just know that the stud dont poke out of the wheel at all for a regular lugnut to fit on
That is ok. If the edge of the lug hole in the wheel is square, and not beveled at 60 degrees, than just drop in to the local parts house and get some mag lugs in the correct thread. You will see how they work by looking at them. The shank goes into the lug hole in the wheel, and the washer does the clamping. Like this:
Just make sure you buy good quality mag lug nuts. I bought the cheap ones years ago and lost a wheel on my 40 ford doing about 40 mph. the heads of the nuts pulled off. Personally now I make sure there is enough stud to thread up into the nut part of the mag lug nut.
To remove a stud from a cast hub, be sure to support from behind with a piece of tubing or pipe. Two good whacks with a BFH should do the job. Hubs will break if you do this wrong. Three hands make it easier to do. To pull the new studs in, I use a big flat washer and an old lug nut turned backwards, oil it well and use the impact.
This is what you need, not longer studs. The holes in the Centerline wheels are purposely made bigger because they are intended for a lugnut that goes through the hole, not a tapered seat type nut that just sits on the outside. Do it right. Losing a wheel while driving is never a good thing.
The easy way to tell is by the hole in the wheel. As suggested it will either be square or have a taper. If you're not sure or they are ******ed up, look at the diameter of the wheel hole compared to the stud. If you have a 1/2" stud and the wheel has a 3/4 hole for instance, then you need the proper mag lug., If the hole is barely larger than the stud, then the wheel should be tapered and a traditional lug nut works and maybe someone shortened the studs at some point in time, Then again Centerlines aren't really HAMB Traditional ............
I(f you ever want to run it on a drag strip they want the long studs made for Centerline/Crager Super Trick and such wheels. I have the long studs and nuts that are threaded through so that I have some of the stud showing. You should have 5/8 inch of thread engagement to be safe, I am told.
Change one stud at a time best to have rotor turned after or at least check run out wth dial indicator........
