We've got an F100 with a Volare suspension and we are having power steering pump issues. It's a big block Ford with the Ford pump. The truck is steering itself to the left....sitting still. And the fluid is burning up quick. Does the Volare steering box take a different pressure than the Ford pump?
Can't help you with the symptoms you describe. However, I can tell you I have a 351W in a 55 F100 with a Volare front suspension. Have had this setup running for over 15 years with no problems. I have seen articles discussing the pressure differences between Ford and Mopar pumps, but never bothered with them because I didn't have any problems. I would suspect a stuck valve, piece of dirt in the wrong place, or other mechanical issue before I worried about pump/steering gear compatibility. Good luck
This might be a stupid reply(if it is I'm sorry), but are you sure the fluid flow is going the right direction? I've seen it befoe on rack&pinion swaps when guys got them done the would either steer by themselves or as soon as you'd turn it would slam to the end. Not sure if this is your problem, but just thought I'd toss it out there. I'm sure there may be some pressure differences from manufacturer to manufacturer, but I wouldn't think it would be that drastic.
ford pump on a mopar box, ford depending on pump may have a higher pressure then the mopar box can use, hint if you have bump steer then its to much. are the hi and low lines crossed? Mopar does use a GM pump. but theres three pumps to pick from. find a gm/mopar pump.
Your control valve is out of adjustment. On top of the steering box where the 2 hoses go. Loosen the 2 bolts and center it. I watched my alignment guy do it while the motor was running. Slightly loosen them and tap it with a plastic mallet. He did it with the wheels off the ground until it no longer turned the tires. Blew me away. I was ready to buy a new steering gear. Ford pump on a Chrysler steering box, no problem (after the adjustment). The Wizzard
