The reason you don't see them at all these days is that the roof gutters were the ONLY thing that hitch mounted to. More than one of those failed when they were in use. Cool idea. Lousy engineering. Plus, even a Super Beetle with that couldn't MAKE 70 mph, unless it was on its was down Loveland Pass or Donner Summit, with a tailwind...what brakes???
