This is my 39 Ford pickup flathead project

First a little history. I bought the body in 1999 and hauled it from Nebraska to Michigan, I got the engine (59AB) from a friend (back in 2000) that was keeping it for a project he had. It was stored in a shed with a tarp over it. It was supposed to have 30,000 miles on it. I pulled the intake off it and pulled out about 10lbs of acorns stored inside. I pulled the pan off and checked the rods and mains with plastigauge and they were good so I buttoned it back up, and installed in in my truck.

I stored it with oil in the cylinders. When I dragged the project out again, last week, I took the plugs out, shot a bit of PB blaster in the cylinders and spun it with the plugs out before I tried it with the plugs in. At first I thought I had a dead coil. (no spark) but I was using the distributor as is. I took it off and cleaned it up and put in fresh points and vola The thing sparks.

I bought the engine without a starter so I got one on ebay but it turned out to be the wrong one. It was a special starter for an early ford automatic. ( I still have the automatic armature if anyone needs one)

I took the starter to Yesteryear Ford and David replced the armature and rebuilt the starter to standard configeration so it should be good.
I got it to fire today but not really run Im not sure if its timing or a stuck valve, I will work on that more tomorrow. Right now the rain is blowing in the carport sideways and I called it quits.

Can anyone tell me what this carb is off of or what the gizmo is on the front of this carb? Ive never seen anything like it. There also isn;t a bellcrank on the drivers side of the carb for a throttle connection. is that normal? Thanks in advance

Thanks for the headsup on the gas heater fittings. Its mounted to one of the float plugs in front of the Holley model 59 bowl so all I need is to get one of those plugs, and I can remove the heater stuff.

Im learning alot that I didn;t know and some things that I had forgotten about flatheads

I still couldn;t get it to start today. The fuel pump doesn;t appear to be working (even from a gravity tank). I tore the carb down and cleaned everthing up and ordered a rebuld kit for it and the fuel pump. So now I wait till the middle of next week for the parts to arrive. I have to pull the master cylinder out and rebuild that also, so I can be doing that while I wait for parts. I was eager to get it running but it will have to wait. I did find some parts I bought 10 years ago but misplaced, so thats an improvement.

I got my order off for a carb rebuld kit and a fule pump rebulid kit. Orderd an adapter from engineered components to mount a modern dual resevour master cylinder. now the wait.... Still gotta order new shackles and a hub puller.

Well, Things keep suprising me. I pulled one front drum off to rebuild the wheel cylinder and found the kit I have is for 42-48 1 3/8 cylinders, not the 1 1/4s on a 39 Thats ok, I can order kits from NAPA.

I pulled the other side off and No brake at all, no shoes no cams, no nuttin. Not only that, the wheel cylinder on that side is total junk so now I have to order a new one, except they don;t make them anymore so I have to order two of the larger ones. Go figure. I guess it won;t be running this week.
