If its a low oil pressure engine, its a babbit pounder, if its a hi oil pressure engine its inserted. Iceman

depends on the year. They switched to full pressure in 1954, but not on all models. In 55, all were full pressure insert style bearings, but the cams were different depending on transmissons. One got a solid lifter cam, and the other hydro.

what year is it?...and what's wrong with babbit? I guess if you're running nitro methane and you have to tear it down after every p*** it could get mildly annoying.. but some people still pour babbit, and ALOT of guys here run babbit motors with no real trouble other than the fact that.......well, they're old motors. all of these motors need more attention than a new honda but let's see how those engines do in 50+ years.

Side motor mounts says it's a 58 or newer engine.Low water pump says it's a 55 or newer engine. In 1954 all Chevy 6's had the hi oil pressure engine with the PG engines being the same in 53.
Babbit? you bet, most all engines have babbit cam bearings.:D

Sounds like something that you should have posted in the "what the self styled experts said about my ride" thread. It's pretty obvious to most of us that it is a 58 or later engine that has insert bearings.

But then maybe you dressed it out in a way that messed with their minds a bit before they opened yap and inserted foot. Award= one point for fooling the know it all.

Now if someone says the same thing about the 292 that is going in my 48 when I get it squared away I'll stand there and grin like a chessie cat and let it go.

The style valve cover is one sign that the motor is not a babbit. There is a 2nd sign that says its a post 54 and not a babbit. Don't believe everything people tell you. Always do research. Buy books, old repair manuals like "MOTOR" ETC.....ETC.....so you know exactly what you have:D

Yes, it does depend on year, but you are off by a year. In '53 Manual shift equipped engines were low pressure, babbited bearing engines and Powerglide engines were full pressure lube insert bearing engines. They outwardly looked pretty much the same in that the valve covers were still the old style two bolts through the top. In '54 ALL engines were full pressure/insert engines and the valve covers went to perimeter screws.

Insert bearings are lead babbit bearings too, just not poured into the block.

    Thats what I was thinking...
I know the 53-54 cut off for full pressure etc, but I believe those to be center bolt covers...
I believe the early 54 non-high pressure were center bolt. Making them babbit...
    But Im no expert...:D
