I bought a 1960 Lincoln a few months before the huge snow we got hit with... well before it was all melted i got the brakes done and got it running. It idles nice and smooth cept when you rev it up a little.. then in rattles.. the oil pressure is great. A buddy of mine was convinced it was the timing chain...so i did that. Still makes noise. Now he's thinking its a collapsed lifter or a worn cam lobe. Is there anything i can do to remedy this or maybe check things before i spend a bunch of cash on stuff i may not need? I plan on having the motor rebuilt NEXT winter.. so any advice? Oh yeah, its not the original motor, its a 390 mercury super marauder
no dice... still makes a little noise.. dosent sound as bad to me..however its noise none the less. What should i check to see if its the pushrods, cam, or lifters?
did you check the compression in the cylinders? I had a SBC and thought it was the same thing a noisy lifter, I pulled the valve covers and turned the motor over with the coil wire off and watched the movement of the rockers to see that all the valves and springs were moving freely/opening and closing, it turned out being a valve guide that was worn/scored and was binding up the valve motion, the spring was not strong enough to push the valve back position of no load
still makes noise.. pulled valve covers off and everything functions normally. poured MM oil down the rods and it quieted WAY down, guess i wont be cruising anytime soon. Anyone got a good rebuilt big block ford motor for sale?
it soaked over night, im gonna see if it busted the lifter loose... if not then ill put a cam and lifters in it. Ill build the bottom end this winter..or whenever it exploads on the side of the road. I got a cell phone...so FUDGE on it. its getting toooooo warm to let her sit.
pulled the rods one at a time just not.. the one on the passenger side bank closest to the front is bent, looks like it was crushed under pressure..its also marred up pretty bad in two spots.. what caused this? also i pushed down on the rods and they didn't move? solid lifters or, what?... I'm not too knowledgeable with engine stuff.. sorry.
even hydraulic lifters if you push down by hand you won't get movement. If you had a bent pushrod, that's probably your noise. replace them, adjust the valves and drive it.
Check your length on that pushrod before you install it, as in, take a known straight one with you to the store.....................Memory fails, but I think there may be 2 different lengths available, for a stock application, and hydraulic cam.........................More than likely had a stuck valve, that bent the pushrod............It happened on my 59 Ford, with an F E Engine, which had been sitting a while.
yeah, i took two rods to the local machine shop. the guy was really cool. he measured it with his fancy measuring stick and ordered one from a catalog. I'm hoping that fixing this rod stops the noise... It was really doglegged more than bent. Either way it was FUDGED up. (fingers Crossed) The valves dont appear to be stuck now, they move up and down freely. Im thinking that because its been sitting one sludged up and stuck, before it broke it free I guess the rod took the brunt of the punishment. I was reading past posts on collapsed lifters and worn cams. but it dosent missfire or anything, just rattles (not taps) at high RPMs.
