Hey Y'all, So I have this 63 Mercury Comet 2 door HardTop for my 16 Year old Daughter. I would like to upgrade to 3 point belts from the old lap slicers. Hoping that someone has already done this and can save me some time fig-ur-in it out. I know it is not Rocket Science but if you have any advice as to the best / safest / least obtrusive place to mount the shoulder strap. TIA- Larry & the Kid.
i put 3 points in my '62 Falcon by using hardware thiefed from f100, but if i were doing it for my kid, i'd go new and buy a set from Julianos. to out the shoulder belt in, youre going to have to either cut your headliner so you can weld in a threaded insert to take the bolt, or figure out a way to put it in the b pillar. me; i'd cut the headliner before i'd put it in the b pillar, as the angle of the belt will be so sharp as to be more dangerous than NOT having one. another thought: make damn sure the seat mountings are strong. if the seat come loose in an accident, the belts will kill you.
I can't say for sure about a 1963 Comet but on my 1965 Comet there was a hole already positoned for the sholder belt behind the headliner. From the factory a large rectangular nut with little clips slides in there. On mine I used aftermarket seat belt hardware. I cut down 2 of the sides of the large washer normally used for under floor, welded the nut to it and used 2 small bolts to keeo it from spinning.
I've seen quite a few older rides "pre-wired" for 3-point harnesses. Definetly peel the headliner back for a better view.
