Ok, my dad has a collection of old Hot Rod and Car Craft, also Motor Trend and some other hot rod, drag racing mags from the 50s and 60s. Being the old school history lover of the three kids, I've shown the most interest in them and he said I could have them.

He has a Hot Rod mag from July 1954. It's got Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis doing some review of a Hot Rod they used in some movie.

So my dad has this friend over and he sees it and has a duck fit and convinces my dad its worth thousands of dollars. I look online, I find a used mag website and I found one on eGay for $20. I was like, haha, sure thing daddy, worth alotta money.

I come to ya'll, all-knowing hot rod history buffs. And I hate to ask this, cause I know, something is only worth how much someone is willing to pay for it. I know that because I collect model horses and some that used to be worth alot, are selling for pennies these days.

My interest is not IN selling it, I collect cool old stuff...of course my dad only saw dollar signs that means more race car money.

I just want to know if it's truly worth that much money having Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in it.

I just thought I'd ask. *shrug* Just so you can see it, here's the cover Hot Rod Magazine

Someone, lots of someones probably, will know more than I do, but a lot of the value comes from condition. The one in the photo is torn and worn and would not be worth nearly as much as a mint condition one. Then there is demand,as you have found. How many issues are you talking about besides the Martin and Lewis one?

The only way you would be able to get thousands would be if you had a whole collection for years of 50s Hot Rod mags.

This one is in pretty good shape, it's not nearly as torn as that one pictured.

I don't know how many are there....maybe 100 issues, give or take? I haven't really looked.

I just realized, my dad was only 11 in 1954. Wow.

I don't think they're complete, they may be...but right now they're all mixed up together. I need to take a rainy day and sort through and see what all is there.

Oh I know, that's why I told dad, I didn't care how much it was worth, it's not for sale. I'll read those jokers and soak it up. :)

I've always been the reader and smart one. I have all kinds of books and mags I pick up and read. Whether it's information I'll use or not, I like to read and learn as much as I can about everything.

Believe it or not there is a lot of interest in Jerry Lewis stuff. I have the tender off his yacht and I get people wanting to buy it every once in a while.

Thats why dad thought it was worth something, because of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis being in it. They've got like some whole skit with them cutting up with each other about the car. Its not really an article, just a couple pages. I took pics of it. Will try to post them later.

I'd wish him good luck with selling 'em and not mention it again.

Tell your dad's ***hole friend he can have it for $500.

I hate ***holes who say what something is worth, but have absolutely no interest in buying it at any low price.

OTOH just tell your dad's friend that he is an ***hole.....

IVE been selling old car magazines at flea markets for over 20 years and love to under cut the over priced jerks.

That issue might be worth a couple of bucks more than one from the same year with no famous car, person or event in it.

The selling price on Ebay would be the "high" end of the going price range I'd think unless some nut case Martin and Lewis fanatic got in the bidding on a just have to finish the collection deal. I've bought several mid 50's issues and never paid more than five bucks for one at a swap meet or on Ebay.

.....for you, Mark.......how about $999.99 apiece?

  24. I get 'em at the flea markets in Ontario for a buck each. Because people don't know what they are and don't think there worth $500 because they are not. They are just magazines.
