We're messing with a 60 Buick thats been sitting for few years( 5 maybe?). Well got it running, put it in gear and nothing. Checked the trans fluid, dry as a bone. Filled her up with fluid (Dexron) and now she moves but acts like shes slipping really bad. Just moving back and forth in the driveway it seemed like the more we did it the better it got but still never acted like we thought it should. It was supposedly driving fine when it was parked. Could seals have dried up causing this problem? Is there anything anybody would suggest trying to get it running again short of pulling the trans?
get some trans-x or something similar..dump that in and see what happens. Its a seal sweller/ clutch band fixer/ mechanic in a can It does work. it should get it to move enough, maybe drive it for a bit..but if the trans was bone dry, it don't look like you will be driving for long.
Bump. Any experts on variable-pitch transmissions? "In its place, a new Turbine Drive transmission featured a variable-pitch fluid-control mechanism that replaced ordinary gears. Buick Transmission Engineer Harold Fischer explained to Car Life that "for maximum acceleration ... you don't shift gears, you shift a constantly flowing stream of oil." Instead of the customary "neck-snapping" downshift when p***ing, the magazine reported "a smooth surge like a rising wave."
Yeah, most Dynaflows create a rising wave of transmission fluid under the car too. I think you're headed down the right path for now- keep filling it and yard driving and I think it'll work out. Just keep it full. Mine totally dumps after sitting for more than about 2 weeks and the car won't move. I add maybe 5 or 6 quarts of fluid and drive it, then it's fine until next time it sits and takes a dump. I have a 60 Buick now and the 59 I had before this was the same exact way. Probably could have paid for the ****** swaps in both with the $ I spent on transmission fluid. Doh. They're not hateful when you drive them, but they definitely don't like sitting around. Good luck.
