Hmm?? Maybe not quite the same type of 'inline six' that most people here are thinking of, ( Yes, Virginia....there are 'hot rod' trucks!) but I can attest to the 3406 Cat in my old '87 Freightlner (with an oversize turbo and injectors and turned up pump, putting 525 hp to the ground) sounding pretty damn good, grossed out at 80,000 lbs and climbing a 4% grade, bellowing through dual 6-inch straight pipes, with 44-plus inches showing on the boost gauge and the pyrometer into the red zone! Didn't sound too bad on the downside either, pulling a downshift and dropping down 2 gears at 60 mph with the 3-stage Jakes on full! Mart3406 (who used to be 'young and irresponsible'...but is now 'older and more mature', chronologically speaking, anyway! )
I'm telling you from experience that inline sixes sound tough if done right. Our race car runs a 230 with 180 degree headers and supertraps son of a gun sounds better than the modifieds that run at the stadium. To me of course...
Hey mysta2 you mentioned your '62 Ranchero - My '62 Falcon coupe ran around with a 200 in it for years with the muffler replaced with a aftermarket VW stinger and insert. It's a 4"outlet type, and I notched the bottom of the bumper to fit. Looks absolutely bitchin' and sounds great with the insert in - but take that puppy out and it is actually possible to rattle windows up to two and a half miles away! Oh, and it actually added a bit of ooomph to the whole deal too! Great sound, a little power, the ability to piss off everyone around the area at will, all for about thirty dollars! Immaturity rules sometimes!
This I gotta see. A 67 Camaro weighs about 2850, Even gutted for racing lets say 2500. That's going to take 500 HP to get it down the track in the high 9's. Even turbo'd I think you'd be hard pressed to get a 250" Stovebolt to make 500. Unless your talking in the 1/8, which doesn't really count
Haha.....yeah man... Straight stacked, Jake'd 6V Detroit's sound pretty good too, if ya don't mind the oil leaks...
--------------------------- I've got to agree. Maybe the 9's he was referring to, are his sixty foot times!!! (double LOL!) Mart3406 ==============================
Yep, they sure can. Here's one I thought about using, but needed more torque to be streetable in a rod. 1 liter or ~60 cubes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-Rnaa5HZ0Q
Mr. Dick Bertolucci has a six that sounds sick, I watched it go down Sac Raceway. I will have to find the pics, if I remember correctly it had a cylinder head machined out of billet and flat hauled ass
Check out www.mighty6.com if you've never seen it. Also, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1CPD17Pwzc and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB9W2MhkmwQ&feature=related
Will I get lynched for posting these inline-6 sounds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fifehHKMJ4E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bElDErZuW_o&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr60Ym5NPdI
There was a 69 Firebird that ran at the strip here back int 70s that had a highly modded ohc 6 that sounded great.
Here's mine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b40QwaEq--Y&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p33UFnMFz7s&feature=related
Well....not HAMB friendly and I'll probably get black listed for it. But here goes...we have several older VW VR6 motored cars in our family. Sorta of an inline, it's actually a 15 deg v6. These motors sound awesome once chipped. They sound even better once they are turbo charged and massaged.... eek:begging for forgiveness from the traditional hot rod Gods )
It only sounds like what's inside the engine. The Tri-Power 250 Six sounds meaner than most . The Hooker SuperComp' long duals dump ahead of rear wheels through Smithy's . ' Has a cool doppler effect when passing by you. Performance built Ford 250 Six Engine – Jahns 10:1 Pistons, Clifford Shot Peened and Balanced Rods, Clifford 272H Cam, Line Bored & Balanced Bottom End, Torque Plate Machined - .070 Cylinder Overbore, Cloyes CamTiming Set, Melling High Volume Oil Pump, Fisher Custom Harmonic Balancer, 1.88 intake Valves, Ported Int/Exh chambers and Relieved valve shrouds, Offenhauser Tri-Power Intake Manifold and Progressive linkage with modified Holley carbs, , Hooker Dual Out Longtube Headers, Re-Curved Duraspark Electronic Distributor ., Lightened Flywheel spinning Centerforce Clutch, the works, a few mysteries...
Any engine at high rpm can sound good. I just watched a YouTube video of a Honda S2000 turbo going thru the gears and it sounds like an Indy car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1Xr_S97Qts I know it irritates many on the hamb to mention any rice burner but so be it. There is also "Fastest 1929 Ford Model A" video on youtube that is another inline 4 that sounds great. You have to watch this Video from start to finnish. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFSGSL3Nrmc Any way even an inline 4 can sound good. Dick .
Nobody has mentioned the way a GMC 302 (and probably some of the other big inch 6's) can make the ground shake. I like that. I used to live a few miles from a stock car track. On the nights the guy was running his 302 it sounded like a B-29 hovering over a swarm of bees.
Here's some pics from this A ---> http://www.mat.fi/n_index.php?nav=gallery_view&gallery=project1929fordmodel-a&g=13 Made in Finland
To answer your question, no. IMHO most inlines sound like barf with loud pipes. I do know of a couple bangers that sound ok.

just had my 49 Ford with a flat six finished. Red's Header with straight 2" inch straight pipes( who needs glasspacks or mufflers !) loud and sounds great !
A friend of mine has an OT 82 ford truck, that has a Clifford 4 bbl and split manifolds. It sounds very smooth and has a lot of power when you kick it in the ass. One of the most beautiful sounding engines IMO.
