so rummaging thru my dads garage today i found a set of heads. i look up the casting numbers and find out they are a set of 202's. one head is a 462 cast and the other is a 291 cast. my question is will these bolt onto my 305 chevy?

They will bolt up to the 305....but will the big valves (2.02) interfere with the small bore?...just wonderin

If they are 2.02's, they really are not that beneficial on the small bore of a 305. The cylinder causes too much shrouding and flow interuption. 1.94's would actually work better.

Some of the 462s were 1.94s. I have a set of those myself. The 291s were the Hi-Po version I do believe.

yeah i looked up the numbers and then checked the clearence between the valves so i know they are 202's. but if its going to be a waste to throw em on the 305 then anyone looking to buy a set of heads? haha

I'd say, if they are 2.02's, you would be better off selling them to someone and using that money elsewhere!! I guess it all depends on what is wrong with the 305 or what you are looking for out of it. Has it got any non-stock parts(intake, cam, headers, etc)? If not, and you just want to have a little better performance, sell the heads and buy headers, intake/carb, and mild cam. These together will give you much more than just swapping on those heads. You could also hang on to them for use on a bigger bore smallblock...

It shouldn't be that hard to find a 350 to put them on if you want to use them.

    I know, Mr. Obvious here.

They're probably worth more to the restorers . With so many good aftermarket heads out there now.Check the Camaro message boards and Chevytalk ...they are still really good heads to use but if they need lots of work it might be cheaper to buy aftermarket

For comparison, I bought a set at LARS last year that were fresh with stainless valves, dual springs and ported and polished for $420.00

Definitely worth more to restorers... stock vortecs are better performers than these.

I seriously doubt that the large valve size will clear the 305 bore, and if it does, it's going to be shrouded. The other BIG thing, is you are going to lose compression with 64cc heads. 305's came with 53 or 58 cc heads, some earlier versions were 60cc. Bottom line, not a good swap at all. Now, if it were me, I'd find a set of old Power Pack heads, just for the traditional look. Butch/56sedandelivery.

YEP!!!! 2.02's are not supposed to fit on a 283, which has a bigger bore than a 305 or atleast that's what i've heard, and certainly shouldnt be needed for a long stroke torque motor like that

ok thats kinda what i was thinking with the large port heads on a 305. plus the 305 is going in a bagged 60 c10 daily so not really trying to hot rod it. thanks for the info and advice!
